Hillrom service guidance recommends annual preventive maintenance and testing. The exact current service-manual revision and serial/configuration-specific checklist control the work. The manufacturer checklist covers overall condition, casters, braking/steering, pedals, hydraulic functions, siderails, sleep deck, mattress, pivots, gas springs, handles, accessories, and installed options.

The Instructions for Use lists an expected service life of approximately ten years under normal use when recommended PM is performed; condition, support, history, and policy still determine disposition. Inspect sooner after collision, fall, fluid intrusion, unusual movement, heavy use, or a reported brake, siderail, hydraulic, steering, or transport-system problem. Any changed interval belongs under the facility's approved AEM program.

Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Verify Identification and Configuration

Action: Record asset tag, serial, product/revision code, manufacture date, department, safe working load, and options. Identify Steering Plus, scale, Active Brake, IntelliDrive, knee articulation, cassette lift, oxygen storage, IV poles, handles, and accessories. Confirm the correct service manual.

Expected outcome: The stretcher matches CMMS and only applicable tests/specifications are selected.

2. Review History and Prepare Safely

Action: Review brake, caster, steering, hydraulic, siderail, mattress, scale, transport, collision, cleaning, and electrical complaints. Remove from patient use, unload attachments/storage, set the brake, and disconnect powered options before inspection.

Expected outcome: Known problems are identified and patient, pinch, movement, electrical, and load hazards are controlled.

3. Inspect Structure and Labels

Action: Inspect frame, base, welds, deck, shrouds, bumpers, mounting points, hardware, labels, and finish for dents, twist, cracks, corrosion, missing clips/fasteners, loose parts, damaged paint, or asymmetry.

Expected outcome: Structure and welds are intact; hardware and labels are complete; no unsafe damage exists.

4. Inspect Mattress and Deck

Action: Remove and inspect mattress cover, seams, closure, retention, and accessible core for punctures, cuts, tears, stains, fluid ingress, delamination, compression, or lost impermeability. Inspect the deck for sharp edges, contamination, damage, and secure mounting.

Expected outcome: Mattress is intact, impermeable, cleanable, and retained on an undamaged deck.

5. Inspect and Clean Casters

Action: Inspect/clean tires, forks, bearings, stems, fasteners, and swivels. Check for debris, cuts, flat spots, wear, separation, wobble, noise, or binding while rolling and rotating each caster.

Expected outcome: Casters roll/swivel freely, track correctly, and have secure serviceable tread and hardware.

6. Verify Brake, Neutral, and Steer

Action: Operate controls from every available position. In brake, push in multiple directions and confirm the unloaded stretcher does not roll. In neutral, confirm all casters roll/swivel. In steer, confirm straight tracking and correct steer-caster/Steering Plus engagement. Inspect pedals, pads, linkages, and hardware.

Expected outcome: Brake holds, neutral permits free movement, steer tracks, and controls latch without excessive force or lost motion.

7. Verify Steering Plus When Fitted

Action: Inspect center wheel, tread, pivot, linkage, pads, and fasteners. Confirm deployment in steer and retraction in neutral/brake. Verify over-center linkage and floor clearance by the current manual. Older service guidance lists approximately 3.5 inches (89 mm) clearance with brake set; the current serial-specific manual controls.

Expected outcome: Steering Plus deploys, retracts, tracks, and clears the floor without wear or interference.

8. Inspect Pump and Control Pedals

Action: Inspect hi-low, Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, brake/steer, and option pedals for wear, missing pads, bending, loose pivots, linkage interference, and labeling. Operate each from all locations.

Expected outcome: Pedals move/return freely and command only the intended function.

9. Verify Hi-Low Hydraulics

Action: Unloaded, pump from minimum to maximum height. Older Hillrom guidance specifies no more than 28 pump strokes; verify the current serial-specific limit. Confirm even raising, smooth pressure-compensated lowering under an approved safe test condition, correct stops, and position holding.

Expected outcome: The stretcher raises within the applicable criterion, lowers smoothly, and holds without creeping, binding, or abnormal noise.

10. Verify Trendelenburg and Reverse Trendelenburg

Action: Operate both ranges unloaded. Confirm controlled movement, correct response, holding, and return to level while keeping personnel/equipment clear.

Expected outcome: Both functions move smoothly, hold securely, and return level without drift, binding, or asymmetry.

11. Inspect Hydraulic Components

Action: Inspect cylinders, rods, hoses, fittings, connections, pumps, and surrounding areas for oil, leaks, scratches, nicks, dents, corrosion, looseness, or contamination. Follow the manual for adjustment, bleeding, or repair.

Expected outcome: Components are dry, intact, secure, and hold all tested positions.

12. Inspect Siderails and Latches

Action: Cycle each siderail. Inspect tubes, pivots, handles, hardware, stops, and spacing. Apply controlled force after latching. Confirm positive independent latching, smooth release, and no excessive play, cracking, bending, or pinch hazard.

Expected outcome: Both siderails travel smoothly, latch fully, resist unintended release, and remain structurally sound.

13. Inspect Back Section, Gas Spring, and CPR Release

Action: Cycle the back section. At full extension inspect the gas-spring rod for scratches, nicks, dents, leakage, or corrosion. Confirm seated jam nut, secure pivots/bolts, and no drift. While controlling the section, test each CPR release and inspect cable, nuts, handle, and relatching.

Expected outcome: Back section moves/holds safely; CPR release works without binding or uncontrolled drop; gas spring/hardware pass.

14. Inspect Other Articulations

Action: Test the headrest, knee/thigh crank, cassette lift, and Automatic Contour when fitted. Check motion, stops, locks, spring tension, pivots, lubrication, and binding. Confirm Automatic Contour raises the knee section with the head and lowers appropriately on return.

Expected outcome: Installed articulations operate, lock, and return correctly without excessive play, force, or wear.

15. Inspect Handles and Accessories

Action: Inspect push handles, IV poles/sockets, oxygen-tank storage, drainage hooks, trays, restraint points, and installed accessories. Verify locks, stops, retainers, labels, hardware, and stowage.

Expected outcome: Accessories are secure, functional, correctly labeled, and do not impair movement or stability.

16. Verify Scale When Fitted

Action: Inspect controls, display, cables, mounts, and battery. Zero with approved linens/accessories arranged normally and verify at selected points using calibrated weights and the current Hillrom procedure. The IFU lists accuracy as 1% or 2.2 lb (1 kg), whichever is greater; confirm the exact configuration specification.

Expected outcome: Scale zero, controls, display, battery, and measurements meet the applicable specification.

17. Verify Legacy IntelliDrive When Fitted

Action: Inspect drive wheel, chains, push-handle controls, cables, batteries, manual-mode switch, indicators, and hardware. Confirm each handle commands forward/reverse, movement is controlled without loud or metal-to-metal noise, wheel tread is serviceable, and the wheel lowers in steer and raises in brake/neutral. Address a flashing service indicator by the current service procedure. Later checklists call for battery replacement when older than three years; verify the applicable revision.

Expected outcome: IntelliDrive controls, stops, deploy/retract action, wheel, battery, chains, sound, and indicators pass.

18. Perform Configuration-Appropriate Electrical Safety

Action: A fully manual/hydraulic P8000 does not require AC protective-earth or leakage testing. For installed scale, Active Brake, IntelliDrive charger/system, or other electrical options, inspect power/battery components and perform only the tests required by that option's manual and facility standard. Record measured values and limits; do not borrow limits from another configuration.

Expected outcome: All electrical inspections and option-specific tests meet current criteria, or are correctly documented N/A.

19. Lubricate and Adjust as Specified

Action: Lubricate caster, linkage, crank, and pivot points only where the current service manual directs, using specified materials/amounts. Make adjustments only by approved procedures and remove excess lubricant from patient-contact and walking surfaces.

Expected outcome: Specified points are serviced without contamination, excess lubricant, or unauthorized adjustment.

20. Restore and Return to Service

Action: Restore mattress, accessories, batteries, covers, fasteners, cords, storage items, and configuration. Confirm brake set, siderails latched, stretcher at safe low height, controls neutral, and powered options ready. Repeat a brief operational check, clean, label, and document.

Expected outcome: The P8000 is clean, stable, complete, functional, and safe for clinical service.

Electrical Safety Testing

Select tests by installed configuration. Standard hydraulic units with no mains-connected equipment are normally N/A. For powered options, document the option, exact Hillrom requirement, analyzer/standard, power-component inspection, protective-earth resistance and/or touch/enclosure leakage where applicable, facility limits, and pass/fail. Do not omit required testing on powered options or impose AC tests on a fully manual unit.
