Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Verify Identification and Configuration

Action: Record asset tag, serial, exact model, tabletop/recessed configuration, voltage, software, displayed total use/cycle count when available, location, and accessories.

Expected outcome: Identity and configuration match CMMS and applicable documentation.

2. Review History

Action: Review weak cleaning, prior foil tests, aborted cycles, low-level or over-temperature messages, abnormal noise, drainage, leaks, electrical concerns, repairs, and solution practices.

Expected outcome: Recurring performance or safety concerns are identified. A leaking tank or unresolved electrical fault remains out of service.

3. De-energize, Drain, and Cool

Action: Remove instruments and basket, switch off, disconnect power, drain safely, and cool below 40°C / 104°F.

Expected outcome: Cleaner is empty, de-energized, and cool.

4. Inspect Installation and Exterior

Action: Inspect support/mounting, ventilation, enclosure, feet, lid, labels, display, keypad, switch, power inlet, cord, plug, ground pin, and strain relief for damage, contamination, heat, looseness, liquid, or blocked airflow.

Expected outcome: Installation and external components are secure, intact, clean, and dry.

5. Inspect Tank and Level Sensor

Action: Inspect tank, bottom, fill marks, and accessible sensor for residue, scale, scratches, pitting, corrosion, deformation, pinholes, or leakage. Clean the sensor without damaging insulation.

Expected outcome: Tank is clean, intact, and leak-free; fill marks and sensor are clean and visible.

6. Inspect Basket, Lid, and Accessories

Action: Inspect the correct basket, lid, beaker holder, drain accessories, and other approved accessories. Confirm every basket rubber foot is present and no load can rest directly on the tank bottom.

Expected outcome: Accessories are clean and undamaged and prevent direct instrument contact with the tank.

7. Inspect Drain System

Action: Inspect valve, fittings, hose, clamps, routing, and receiving drain/container for cracks, kinks, blockage, looseness, deterioration, or leaks. Exercise the drain control.

Expected outcome: Drain opens, flows, closes, and remains leak-free.

8. Clean the Unit

Action: With power disconnected and temperature below 40°C / 104°F, wipe tank and exterior with a damp soapy cloth and rinse as directed. Remove sediment without scratching the tank or wetting electrical openings.

Expected outcome: Tank and exterior are clean, rinsed, and free of damaging residue.

9. Fill and Verify Level Protection

Action: Close the drain and fill to the required level with water and the cleaning-agent concentration specified by the solution/instrument manufacturers. Do not exceed the maximum line. Verify an enabled sensor prevents operation below the required level, then restore the fill. Never run dry.

Expected outcome: Correct liquid level is recognized and dry operation is prevented.

10. Verify Controls and Display

Action: Check switch, display, keypad, menus, cycle time, power, degas, frequency leap, temperature units, messages, serial/software display, total use, and cycle count when available. Do not alter protected settings without authorization.

Expected outcome: Controls respond normally and no unresolved fault is present.

11. Run Degas Cycle

Action: With fresh correctly mixed solution, no instruments, and lid installed, run degas. Midmark recommends 5–10 minutes; use the foil-test-specified 10 minutes before that test.

Expected outcome: Solution is degassed without a level, temperature, or sonics fault.

12. Verify Operational Cycle and Temperature Protection

Action: Run an approved empty/test cycle and confirm countdown, displayed temperature, ultrasonic activity, and completion. Check for leaks, abnormal noise, odor, or faults. The unit should abort at 60°C / 140°F. Midmark recommends limiting liquid to 55°C / 130°F when cleaning medical equipment to avoid coagulating protein and bioburden.

Expected outcome: Cycle completes normally without unsafe heat, leakage, abnormal noise, or fault.

13. Perform Quarterly Foil Test

Action:

  1. Attach a smooth foil strip approximately 6 inches long to a rigid support so it hangs nearly to the bottom without touching the tank.
  2. Remove foil, prepare fresh Midmark solution to the proper level, and degas for 10 minutes.
  3. Turn the unit off, remove basket, and suspend foil in the center. Use multiple samples for larger QC6/QC6R tanks.
  4. Operate ultrasonics for 1 minute.
  5. Remove foil, drain it, and air dry without wrinkling.
  6. Inspect the submerged area for uniform fine dimpling/pebbling. Evaluate uniformity, not hole count.

Expected outcome: The submerged area is uniformly pebbled. An area greater than approximately 1 inch in diameter without pebbling may indicate a fault. If excessive holes obscure evaluation, repeat with shorter exposure.

14. Resolve and Document Foil Result

Action: Repeat a suspected failure using new foil. If the same unacceptable area remains, remove from service and contact the service provider. For a pass, label, date, and retain the dry foil. Drain foil-contaminated solution before cleaning instruments.

Expected outcome: Passing cavitation is documented or a repeatable failure is escalated.

15. Perform Electrical Safety Testing

Action: Inspect cord, plug, ground pin, inlet, switch, strain relief, and chassis. Perform facility-required testing with water in the bath, using a qualified person. Record analyzer, standard, ground resistance, leakage, limits, and results.

Expected outcome: Grounding and leakage meet approved limits in the manufacturer-specified filled condition.

16. Final Restore

Action: Drain test solution, rinse, close drain, reinstall basket/lid/accessories, verify rubber feet, dry surfaces, restore approved settings, and document results.

Expected outcome: Cleaner is clean, leak-free, assembled, electrically safe, and ready for fresh clinical solution.

Electrical Safety Testing

The QuickClean is grounded mains-powered equipment. Midmark states that portable-appliance testing must be conducted with water in the bath by a trained, qualified electrical professional.
