Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status
Midmark lists the following maintenance:
- Weekly: Clean upholstery with a 10:1 water-to-bleach solution, wipe painted metal and plastic with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, and visually inspect for obvious damage.
- Semi-annually: Test all mechanical functions with the foot control and hand control when present; check the manual back release and shroud motion; inspect labels, hardware, power cord, wiring, connections, and stirrups; lubricate the back hinge with light machine oil and the footrest slide with household furniture wax.
Model distinction: The Ritter 204 is a fixed-height manual exam table. The Ritter 222 is a powered-height Barrier-Free exam table. The weekly cleaning and general inspection items apply to both. Midmark's explicit semiannual powered-motion, shroud, control, wiring, and lubrication schedule is published for the 222; the reviewed 204 user information calls for periodic inspection but does not assign those items a fixed calendar interval. Use the correct branch below and do not perform powered-base tests on a 204.
Changes to the applicable manufacturer interval or tasks should be managed through the facility's approved AEM program.

Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Verify Identification and Configuration
Action: Verify asset tag, serial number, Ritter 222 model suffix, electrical rating, location, and service history. Record installed hand control, drawer heater, receptacle, pelvic tilt, stirrups, arms, and accessories.
Expected outcome: Table and options match the CMMS record.
2. Remove the Table From Clinical Use
Action: Remove the patient and stored items, lower the table to a safe height, disconnect power for close inspection/cleaning, and protect controls from accidental activation.
Expected outcome: The table is safely prepared without unintended motion.
3. Inspect for Damage
Action: Inspect upholstery, top, frame, base, shrouds, footrest, stirrups, drawers, controls and cords, handles, receptacle, power cord, plug, strain reliefs, and accessories for cracks, tears, sharp edges, looseness, deformation, corrosion, liquid entry, exposed conductors, or pinch hazards.
Expected outcome: No condition could cause unsafe operation.
4. Inspect Labels and Hardware
Action: Verify safety, operating, electrical, duty-cycle, and model/serial labels are present and legible. Check accessible fasteners and attachment points.
Expected outcome: Labels are readable and all hardware/accessories are secure.
5. Clean the Table
Action: Clean upholstery with the manufacturer-listed 10:1 water-to-bleach mixture or current compatible Midmark/facility method. Do not allow pooling. After contact time, rinse with clear water and dry. Wipe painted metal/plastic with a soft cloth and mild cleaner; keep liquids from electrical openings.
Expected outcome: Surfaces are clean, rinsed, dry, and undamaged.
6. Inspect the Electrical System
Action: Inspect the full accessible power cord, hospital-grade plug and ground pin, strain relief, control cords, visible wiring, receptacle, and accessible connections for cuts, crushing, heat, discoloration, looseness, exposed conductors, or arcing. Do not remove covers unless authorized by the current service procedure.
Expected outcome: Electrical components are intact and secure.
7. Test Powered Base Motion - Ritter 222 Only
Action: For the Ritter 222, reconnect power and, with the table unloaded and travel clear, run base up/down through its available range using the foot control. Observe starts, stops, speed, noise, binding, drift, and travel limits; confirm motion stops when the control is released. Mark this step N/A for the fixed-height Ritter 204.
Expected outcome: The 222 moves smoothly, predictably, and stops normally; the 204 is correctly documented as N/A.
8. Test Hand Control When Present - Ritter 222 Only
Action: On a 222 equipped with a hand control, repeat all available powered functions and inspect its cord, housing, buttons, and bracket. Mark N/A for a 204 or a 222 without this option.
Expected outcome: Every installed function operates normally.
9. Test the Manual Back Release
Action: Support the backrest, operate the release, move through the usable range, and verify controlled release and secure holding at selected positions.
Expected outcome: Backrest moves safely and holds without drift or sudden descent.
10. Inspect Powered-Base Shroud Operation - Ritter 222 Only
Action: On the 222, cycle the base while observing telescoping shrouds. Check for smooth, quiet tracking without rubbing, catching, separation, or pinch hazards; inspect visible plastic glides. Mark N/A for the fixed-height 204.
Expected outcome: The 222 shrouds track correctly with no missing glide or interference.
11. Inspect and Lubricate the Back Hinge
Action: Inspect for looseness, wear, deformation, or noise. Apply a small amount of light machine oil as specified and remove excess.
Expected outcome: Hinge is secure and smooth without excess lubricant.
12. Inspect and Lubricate the Footrest Slide
Action: Extend/retract the footrest, inspect the slide and support, apply household furniture wax, and remove excess.
Expected outcome: Footrest extends, supports, and retracts smoothly and securely.
13. Inspect the Stirrups
Action: Extend each stirrup and verify easy movement and secure locking in every lateral position. Inspect bars, sockets, stops, and locks.
Expected outcome: Both stirrups move freely and lock securely.
14. Test Installed Options
Action: Safely check installed drawer heater, receptacle, pelvic tilt, drawers, arms, and accessories according to applicable Midmark instructions. Do not invent a temperature limit or load test.
Expected outcome: Each option operates normally and remains secure.
15. Perform Electrical Safety Testing When Applicable
Action: Test the mains-powered Ritter 222 and any electrically equipped 204 under facility/NFPA 99 requirements. Record protective-earth resistance and touch/chassis leakage with analyzer configuration and limits. Test an installed receptacle per facility policy. For a 204 with no power cord, receptacle, heater, or other electrical option, document electrical safety as N/A.
Expected outcome: Applicable results meet facility requirements, or the non-electrical configuration is correctly documented as N/A.
16. Restore and Return to Service
Action: Remove test equipment/excess lubricant, restore accessories and controls, secure covers/drawers, perform a final motion check, and leave the table in a safe low position.
Expected outcome: Table is clean, dry, complete, stable, safe, and ready.
Electrical Safety Testing
The Ritter 222 is grounded mains-powered equipment. A Ritter 204 may also have a power cord for an optional receptacle and/or drawer heater. Inspect the hospital-grade plug, protective-earth pin, cord, strain relief, receptacle, and accessible electrical components whenever present. Ground resistance is measured in ohms, expected ≤ 0.5 Ω or facility/NFPA 99 criteria if different.
