How to Show What You Actually Do

A practical guide for BMETs, clinical engineers, students, and HTM staff who need to turn real biomedical equipment work into a stronger resume.

Biomed resumes can be weirdly hard to write.

A BMET may work on patient monitors, infusion pumps, beds, defibrillators, telemetry systems, integration issues, PMs, repairs, recalls, parts, vendors, documentation, and clinical support every week.

Then the resume says:

Performed preventive maintenance and repaired medical equipment.

That is true, but it barely explains anything.

This page is about building a stronger biomed resume by showing equipment scope, troubleshooting ability, documentation, safety awareness, clinical communication, vendor coordination, project work, and the actual value you bring to a healthcare technology program.

The goal is not to exaggerate.

The goal is to describe the work clearly enough that someone outside your shop understands what you actually do.

Why Biomed Resumes Are Hard to Write

Biomed work is broad.

One day you may be replacing a broken NIBP connector on a patient monitor.

The next day you may be chasing a telemetry communication problem, checking an electrical safety failure, coordinating vendor service on imaging equipment, documenting a PM failure, or explaining to a department why an accessory issue is not a device failure.

The hard part is that all of that can get flattened into vague resume language.

They are just too generic.

A stronger resume helps the reader understand the type of equipment, the type of problems, the level of responsibility, and the clinical environment you supported.

The Simple Version

A good biomed resume should answer five basic questions:

Do not just say you fix medical equipment. Show the equipment, the troubleshooting, the documentation, the clinical impact, and the systems you support.

What Hiring Managers Need to See

A hiring manager, supervisor, recruiter, or hospital HR screen may be trying to figure out whether you can support the equipment and workflow they actually have.

They may look for:

Your resume should make those things easy to find.

Show Equipment Scope

Equipment scope matters.

A resume that says “repaired medical equipment” does not tell the reader whether you worked on low-risk accessories, general biomedical equipment, life support equipment, OR equipment, imaging support systems, integration systems, or a mix of everything.

Add real equipment categories when they are true.

Examples:

You do not need to list every model you have ever touched.

But you should give enough scope that the reader understands your real clinical engineering exposure.

Show Troubleshooting, Not Just PMs

Preventive maintenance is important, but troubleshooting shows how you think.

A stronger resume explains that you can verify complaints, isolate problems, test equipment, identify accessory issues, replace failed parts, escalate appropriately, and return equipment safely to service.

Weak:

Fixed equipment.

Better:

Troubleshot reported equipment failures by verifying complaints, isolating accessory/device/user setup issues, performing functional checks, replacing failed parts, and documenting corrective actions.

That tells a much better story.

Show Risk and Patient Care Awareness

Biomed is not just repair work.

It happens in a patient care environment.

Your resume should show that you understand clinical risk, downtime, patient safety, and when equipment should not be returned to use.

Examples:

That kind of language shows judgment, not just tool use.

Show Systems, Software, and Integration Work

Modern biomed work increasingly overlaps with IT, networking, integration, and software-supported equipment.

If you support any of that, say it clearly.

Examples may include:

Worked with IT.

Better:

Supported networked medical equipment and device integration workflows by assisting with connectivity checks, device configuration, central station communication, and escalation between clinical engineering, IT, vendors, and clinical departments.

Show Documentation and Compliance

Documentation is a major part of biomed work.

If your work orders are clear, complete, and useful, that is a skill.

Resume language can include:

Documentation is not just paperwork.

Good documentation shows what happened, what was found, what was corrected, and why the equipment was safe to return to use.

Show Vendor Coordination

Vendor coordination is not just “called vendor.”

It may include troubleshooting, quote review, parts coordination, scheduling, service follow-up, downtime communication, warranty questions, and making sure the issue actually gets resolved.

Weak:

Worked with vendors.

Better:

Coordinated vendor service for escalated repairs, quotes, parts availability, and equipment downtime while communicating repair status to clinical departments.

That shows ownership.

Show Project Work

Project work can separate your resume from someone who only lists daily repair tasks.

Examples:

A project bullet should show what changed because of your work.

Example:

Assisted with deployment and validation of networked patient care equipment, including incoming inspection, device configuration, functional testing, clinical coordination, and CMMS documentation.

Show Certifications and Training

Certifications, degrees, manufacturer training, and relevant coursework can help, especially when they match the role you are applying for.

Include items such as:

Do not bury certifications at the bottom if they are important for the job.

Make them easy to find.

Entry-Level BMET Resume Tips

If you are new to biomed, you may not have a long list of hospital equipment experience yet.

That is okay.

Focus on transferable skills:

Entry-level resumes should show that you are trainable, careful, technically curious, and able to work around clinical staff professionally.

Experienced BMET Resume Tips

If you already have biomed experience, your resume should not read like an entry-level task list.

Senior or lead-level resumes should show more than technical repair ability.

They should show ownership, judgment, coordination, and influence.

Use them as a way to think about your own work more clearly.

Preventive Maintenance

Weak:

Performed PMs on medical equipment.

Better:

Performed scheduled preventive maintenance, functional checks, electrical safety testing, and service documentation for patient care equipment in a hospital clinical engineering program.

Corrective Maintenance

Weak:

Fixed broken equipment.

Better:

Troubleshot reported medical equipment failures by verifying complaints, isolating device, accessory, setup, or user-related causes, completing functional checks, and documenting corrective actions.

Clinical Support

Weak:

Helped nurses with equipment.

Better:

Responded to clinical equipment support requests, verified reported issues with staff, explained equipment status, and coordinated safe return-to-service or escalation when needed.

Vendor Work

Weak:

Worked with vendors.

Better:

Coordinated vendor service for escalated repairs, parts quotes, warranty questions, and equipment downtime while maintaining communication with clinical departments and documenting service activity.

Device Integration

Weak:

Worked on device integration.

Better:

Supported medical device integration workflows by assisting with connectivity checks, device identification, central station communication, middleware/vendor escalation, and troubleshooting between clinical equipment and hospital information systems.

Examples by Equipment Type

Equipment-specific bullets can make your resume more believable and searchable.

Patient Monitoring

Supported bedside monitoring equipment, telemetry workflows, central station communication, parameter modules, ECG/SpO2/NIBP accessories, and clinical troubleshooting requests.

Infusion Pumps

Performed PMs, functional checks, corrective repairs, battery checks, channel/module troubleshooting, and documentation for infusion pump systems used in patient care areas.

Defibrillators

Completed scheduled checks and corrective maintenance support for defibrillators, including functional testing, accessory inspection, battery-related concerns, and return-to-service documentation.

Beds and Stretchers

Troubleshot bed and stretcher complaints involving power, controls, movement, scale functions, nurse call connections, siderails, brakes, and clinical usability concerns.

Networked or Integrated Devices

Assisted with troubleshooting networked medical equipment by verifying device identity, location, connectivity, configuration, communication path, and escalation details for IT or vendor support.

How to Describe PM Work

PM work should not sound like button-clicking.

Strong PM language can include:

How to Describe Troubleshooting Work

Troubleshooting bullets should show how you move from complaint to cause to resolution.

How to Describe Device Integration Work

Device integration can be difficult to explain because it sits between equipment, IT, vendors, and clinical systems.

Electrical safety testing is worth mentioning if it is part of your PM or incoming inspection workflow.

How to Describe CMMS / Work Order Experience

CMMS experience is more than closing tickets.

You may be documenting service history, PM completion, failed checks, parts usage, downtime, vendor service, department communication, and asset status.

Better bullet:

Maintained accurate CMMS records by documenting equipment complaints, troubleshooting findings, corrective actions, parts usage, test results, vendor involvement, and return-to-service status.

If you help maintain asset records, add that too.

Example:

Assisted with equipment database accuracy by updating asset status, locations, PM details, model information, and service history as part of clinical engineering operations.

Common Resume Mistakes

Common biomed resume mistakes include:

The biggest mistake is making real experience sound smaller than it is.

Connect This to a Biomed Job Search

A resume should connect to the jobs you are actually applying for.

If a job posting emphasizes PM completion, equipment repair, electrical safety, documentation, and customer service, make sure those items are easy to find on your resume.

If a role emphasizes device integration, networking, telemetry, monitoring, or clinical systems, make sure your related experience is not buried under a generic “repaired equipment” statement.

A job search is not only about finding openings.

It is also about understanding what those openings are asking for and making sure your resume clearly answers the question:

Can this person support the equipment, departments, documentation, and clinical environment we need help with?

Final Thoughts

A strong biomed resume does not need to sound fancy.

It needs to be clear.

Show the equipment you support.

Show the problems you troubleshoot.

Show that you understand documentation, patient safety, clinical workflow, and escalation.

Show the systems, vendors, departments, and projects you have been trusted with.

Do not exaggerate.

But do not undersell yourself either.

A lot of biomed work is invisible when it is done well.
