There Is More Than One Route Into Biomed
Many biomeds enter through a two-year technical program, while others arrive through electronics, military training, field service, apprenticeships, or related engineering education. A certification can document knowledge, but it is not the same thing as a degree, supervised experience, manufacturer training, or employer competency.

Choose the Route That Fits Your Starting Point
BMET or Biomedical Equipment Technology
Often the most direct academic route into hands-on medical equipment service. Programs may combine electronics, anatomy, safety, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and clinical experience.
Understand BMET degree programs
Electronics or Engineering Technology
A strong technical foundation that can transfer into biomed when paired with medical-device knowledge, clinical workflow awareness, and relevant experience.
Bachelor's and Engineering Programs
Biomedical, electrical, mechanical, or engineering-technology degrees can support design, systems, leadership, clinical engineering, and specialized technical roles. They are not automatically the same as BMET training.

Military, Apprenticeship, or Employer Training
Structured technical training and supervised work can provide a practical route into HTM. What matters is how the training, experience, and employer requirements fit the role being pursued.

- Logical troubleshooting and test equipment
- Documentation, risk, and communication
- Networking and connected-device fundamentals
Where day-to-day work may differ
- Some roles use little component-level repair
- Device fleets and responsibilities vary by employer
- Imaging, cybersecurity, integration, and management require different depth
- Manufacturer and facility procedures still govern actual service work
- Passing an exam does not replace supervised hands-on competency

Find a Biomed or Related Technical Program
Program names, formats, and availability change. These maintained directories are better starting points than a fixed list of schools.
Questions to ask before enrolling
- Does the curriculum prepare students for hands-on equipment service or for engineering/design work?
- Are laboratory hours, internships, or clinical experiences included?
- What equipment and test tools do students actually use?
- What are the program's completion, placement, and employer-partnership outcomes?
- Is the institution and, when applicable, the specific program properly accredited?
