The Simple Version
As of September 2026, AAMI offers full and candidate-status routes. Full status requires one of three combinations: a qualifying associate degree or higher plus two years of full-time BMET experience, completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment program plus two years of experience, or four years of full-time BMET experience. Candidate status lets someone test earlier with a qualifying degree, the military program, or two years of full-time BMET experience.
A successful candidate-status applicant has five years to complete a full-status experience route. Read the current CBET page and candidate handbook before applying, then confirm that your diploma, military record, or employment documentation matches what AAMI requests. Eligibility permits an application; it does not guarantee approval of incomplete documentation or a passing exam score.
Full Status
Full status means you meet the eligibility requirements for the complete CBET credential.
You are not simply taking the exam early.
Path 1: Degree + Experience
The first current route combines:
- Associate degree or higher in an electronics, technology, or science program
- Two years of full-time BMET work experience
This is likely a common path for graduates of:
- Biomedical Equipment Technology
- Biomedical Engineering Technology
- Electronics Technology
programs.
Does the Degree Have to Say “Biomedical”?
AAMI's currently published wording is broader than that.
It says:
Electronics, technology, or science program.
Applicants should still verify their individual education with AAMI rather than assuming a program qualifies.
Path 2: Military Training + Experience
The second full-status path currently requires:
- Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program
- Two years of full-time BMET experience
Path 3: Experience Only
The third route currently allows:
Four years of full-time BMET work experience.
This means a college degree is not the only route to full-status eligibility under the current requirements.
Candidate Status
Candidate status exists for applicants who want to pursue certification but have not yet accumulated everything required for full status.
Successful candidates are currently given:
Five years
to satisfy the minimum full-certification requirements.
Who Can Test Under Candidate Status?
To test as a candidate, AAMI currently says an applicant must meet at least one of the following by the application deadline:
- Associate degree or higher in an electronics, technology, or science program
- Completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program
- Two years of full-time BMET work experience
Example 1
You have:
Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology.
Experience:
Six months.
You do not yet satisfy the current full-status degree-plus-two-years pathway.
But the degree itself may satisfy the minimum requirement to test through candidate status.
Example 2
You have:
No degree.
Experience:
Two years full-time as a BMET.
That currently meets one of the candidate-status minimum pathways.
It does not yet meet the four-year experience-only requirement for full status.
Example 3
You have:
Four years full-time BMET experience.
No degree.
Under AAMI's currently published requirements, that satisfies one of the full-status eligibility paths.
Candidate Status Does Not Remove the Experience Requirement
This is important.
Passing the exam through candidate status does not automatically mean:
I now qualify for full CBET certification regardless of experience.
You still have to satisfy the full-certification eligibility conditions within the allowed period.
Why Candidate Status Exists
It lets someone demonstrate the examination portion earlier in their career.
Then experience can continue accumulating.
Work Experience Matters
CBET is not designed solely as an academic test.
The eligibility requirements recognize that working on healthcare technology is part of professional competency.
What Counts as BMET Experience?
Do not guess.
Job titles vary widely.
Someone may be called:
- BMET
- Biomedical Technician
- Clinical Engineering Technician
- Field Service Technician
while doing very similar work.
If your experience is unusual or your title does not clearly identify BMET duties, verify eligibility directly with AAMI.
Documentation
AAMI reviews applications to determine eligibility and documentation requirements.
The current candidate handbook states that applications are reviewed for supporting information and documentation before approval.
Do Not Wait Until Exam Week
Eligibility review occurs before you sit for the certification.
Know which path you intend to use before applying.
Testing Windows
As of August 2026, AAMI lists CBET among the certification examinations offered during scheduled May and November testing windows.
For example, its currently published calendar lists the November 1–15, 2026 testing window and future May 2027 window.
Check the current schedule before applying because deadlines change.
Candidate Status vs CABT
Do not confuse:
CBET Candidate Status
with:
CABT.
CABT is a separate certification.
Candidate status is a pathway associated with eventually earning full CBET certification.
Degree vs Certification Eligibility
Having a degree can help satisfy an eligibility path.
It does not automatically give you CBET.
You still have to:
- Apply
- Be approved
- Pass the exam
- Meet full-status requirements
Four Years of Experience Does Not Mean Four Years of Expertise
Eligibility criteria establish a minimum pathway.
They do not guarantee equal experience.
One technician may spend four years primarily servicing:
- Infusion pumps
while another works across:
- OR
- ICU
- Imaging support
- Networking
Both may have valuable but different experience.
Check Current Requirements Before Building a Career Plan Around Them
Certification programs can change:
- Eligibility
- Exam content
- Fees
- Deadlines
Do not rely on a ten-year-old forum post.
Use current certification information.
What Did You Actually Prove?
If someone says:
I am eligible to sit for the CBET exam.
You still need to know:
Full status or candidate status?
Those are different.
If someone passes the exam through candidate status:
You proved:
They passed the examination component.
You have not automatically proven:
They have completed the experience requirements for full CBET certification.
A Useful Eligibility Checklist
Ask:
Do I have a qualifying associate degree or higher?
Did I complete a U.S. military biomedical equipment program?
How many years of full-time BMET experience do I have?
Then determine whether you appear to fit:
Full Status
or:
Candidate Status.
Finally:
Verify it directly with AAMI.

CBET eligibility becomes much easier to understand when you separate:
Taking the exam
from:
Meeting the requirements for full certification.
