How to Prepare for the CBET Exam

A practical study strategy for biomeds who already work on equipment but need to prepare for a broad certification exam

Studying for the CBET exam is different from learning how to troubleshoot equipment at work.

Start With the Official Exam Outline

Before buying a stack of study guides, download the current AAMI content outline and use it as the map for everything else. As of September 2026, Healthcare Technology and Function and Healthcare Technology Problem Solving each account for about 30% of the exam, Healthcare Information Technology about 17%, Public Safety about 10%, Anatomy and Physiology about 7%, and Fundamentals of Electricity and Electronics about 6%.

Those percentages should influence your study time, but they are not a prediction of the exact questions you will receive. Turn each outline item into a checklist, mark what you can explain without notes, and revisit the official page before registering in case AAMI changes the outline, eligibility rules, testing window, or fees.

Do Not Study Every Subject Equally

Giving a 30% domain exactly the same study time as a 6% domain is usually inefficient. Put more hours into the heavily weighted areas and into subjects where your baseline score is weak, while still reviewing every domain so a smaller section does not become a preventable gap.

Use short study cycles that mix recall with application: explain a concept in plain English, solve a related problem without notes, and then review why each wrong answer was wrong. That is closer to the reasoning the exam demands than repeatedly rereading a chapter.
