A calibration or inspection sticker is a visible pointer to a documented service event. The meaningful work happened before the label was applied: a technician used appropriate test equipment, compared results with the correct specification, adjusted or failed the device when required, and recorded the readings, procedure, date, and disposition.
The sticker is not the measurement and does not guarantee that the device is still accurate today. Labels can be wrong, damaged, transferred, or separated from incomplete records, and equipment can fail after passing. When status matters, verify the asset identity and check the CMMS or calibration record for the actual procedure, results, technician, test equipment, and due-date basis.
What Is Calibration?
Calibration generally involves comparing the output of an instrument or device against a known reference.
Depending on the equipment and procedure, calibration may involve:
- Measuring accuracy
- Comparing against a standard
- Adjusting the device
- Recording results
Calibration Does Not Always Mean Adjustment
This is an important distinction.
A device may be tested and found:
Within specification.
No adjustment is needed.
That can still be part of a calibration process.
Verification
Verification asks:
Does the device meet the required specification?

Defibrillator set to:
200 J.
Analyzer measures:

Adjustment
Adjustment means changing the device to bring its performance closer to the desired value.

Test Results Matter More Than Label Appearance
If a clinician reports incorrect performance:
Investigate the complaint.

It was calibrated six months ago, so it can't be wrong.
Sticker Is Administrative Evidence
A label is useful for quickly identifying:

If a device has a current calibration sticker:
You proved:
Someone labeled it as having completed the applicable calibration/service process on the documented date.
You did not independently prove:
The device is accurate right now.
If you review the maintenance record and see actual measurements within specification:
You proved much more about its condition at the time of that test.
If you independently test it today and it passes:
Now you have evidence of its current performance.
Final Thoughts for Biomeds
Calibration stickers are useful.
They provide a fast visual indication of maintenance status.
But the sticker is not the calibration.
Think:
Measurement → Comparison → Adjustment if needed → Verification → Documentation → Sticker.
The technical work happens before the label goes on.
So when someone points to a current sticker and says:
It was calibrated, so it has to be good,
remember:
Equipment can change.
Sensors can drift.
Components can fail.
And a label is only as meaningful as the process and documentation behind it.
