1. Ensure Patient Safety and Preserve ECG Data
Do not use a frozen, repeatedly restarting, or incompletely started electrocardiograph for patient testing.
Disconnect the patient safely.
Move urgent ECG testing to another verified device.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle the unit while an ECG may still be saving.
Preserve any locally stored records that may not have transmitted.

2. Confirm the Exact Startup Behavior
Determine whether the device:
- Does not power on.
- Stops at a logo or startup screen.

- Shows an unusual sound, odor, heat, or error message.
Expected outcome: The failure is clearly identified as no-power, incomplete boot, boot loop, or application freeze.
3. Check AC Power and Power Cord Condition
Inspect the power cord, plug, strain relief, and device inlet.
Confirm the cord is fully seated.
Test the outlet using an approved method.
Try a known-good approved power cord when appropriate.
Remove the unit from service immediately if there is heat, odor, arcing, liquid intrusion, or damaged insulation.

Do not open the enclosure, disconnect internal batteries, or use undocumented key combinations.
Expected outcome: The unit completes startup and remains responsive. If stable, continue to final verification.
6. Compare AC and Battery Behavior
If the device can operate on battery:
- Test startup on verified AC power.
- Test startup on battery only when the battery condition is considered safe.
- Note whether the failure occurs in one power mode or both.
- Stop testing if the battery is swollen, hot, leaking, or physically damaged.
Expected outcome: A power-mode-specific problem is identified or ruled out.
7. Observe the Point of Failure
During one controlled startup, record:
- Last visible screen
- Approximate time before restart or freeze
- Fan, printer, or drive activity
- Indicator-light behavior
- Any connected accessory
- Whether the failure repeats at the same point
- Do not repeatedly cycle the unit beyond what is necessary to characterize the fault.
Expected outcome: Reproducible information is available for service escalation.
8. Check for a Function-Specific Freeze
If the unit reaches the main screen:
- Test only basic, nonpatient functions.
- Determine whether freezing occurs during patient entry, ECG acquisition, printing, record retrieval, USB use, or transmission.
- Disconnect the related external accessory and retest once.
Expected outcome: The problem is isolated to a specific workflow or confirmed as a general software failure.
9. Verify Available Storage and Queue Status When Accessible
When the interface remains stable long enough:
- Check whether internal memory is full.
- Review whether a large transmission queue is present.
- Do not delete patient records without verifying archival status.
- Avoid opening multiple records or initiating unnecessary exports.
Expected outcome: Storage or queue conditions are identified without risking patient data.
10. Perform Final Functional Verification
After apparent recovery:
- Confirm the unit boots repeatedly without looping.
- Verify the interface remains responsive.
- Test patient-data entry.
- Acquire an ECG from an approved simulator.
- Print or display the ECG.
- Save and retrieve the test record.
- Verify communication functions when applicable.
- Complete required electrical-safety testing after repair.
Expected outcome: Startup, user interface, acquisition, storage, printing, and communication operate normally. The unit may be returned to service.
If the Problem Persists
Power source, cord, peripherals, normal restart, and basic storage causes have been ruled out. The remaining possibilities may include software corruption, internal storage failure, power-supply instability, battery-system fault, processor or memory failure, or another internal service-level problem.
The device should be:
- Removed from service
- Labeled Out of Service
- Sent for repair or bench evaluation
- Evaluated using appropriate GE Healthcare documentation and approved test equipment
- Repaired or configured only by qualified personnel
- Do not attempt board-level repair, unauthorized software loading, internal battery disconnection, or undocumented recovery procedures. Return the unit to service only after complete startup and functional verification.

Clinical Use Tip
A device that boots successfully once but continues to freeze intermittently is not reliable enough for diagnostic ECG acquisition.
