Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Protect the Patient and Maintain Imaging Capability
If the exposure control is unreliable during an active procedure, stop depending on it and use another verified control or imaging system as clinically appropriate. Do not continue using an intermittent exposure switch.
Expected outcome: The patient is not dependent on an unreliable fluoroscopy control.
2. Confirm Which Control Is Affected
Determine whether the footswitch, hand switch, or both are unresponsive. Ask whether the switch works intermittently, only in certain positions, or stopped following movement, cleaning, or cable handling.
Expected outcome: The failure is isolated to a specific control or confirmed as a system-wide exposure problem.
3. Verify Overall X-Ray Readiness
Confirm the OEC Elite is fully started, communicating normally, and otherwise ready for fluoroscopy. If neither control works, verify the problem is not simply an overall X-ray inhibit condition.
Expected outcome: The system is ready for exposure and the problem can be evaluated specifically at the control level.
4. Inspect the Switch Assembly
Examine the footswitch or hand switch for cracks, fluid intrusion, sticky mechanisms, damaged strain relief, crushed cable sections, bent connector pins, or other visible damage.
Expected outcome: The control is physically intact. A visibly damaged or contaminated control is removed from service rather than repeatedly tested.
5. Verify the Connector Is Fully Seated
Inspect the accessible connection point and securely reconnect the switch if needed. Ensure the cable is not being pulled, trapped under equipment, or sharply bent.
Expected outcome: The switch is firmly connected with no cable strain. If normal operation returns, proceed to final verification.
6. Compare the Alternate Exposure Control
If the system supports both a footswitch and hand switch, test the unaffected control under approved non-patient conditions.
Expected outcome: If one control works and the other does not, the problem is isolated to the failed switch, cable, or associated external connection.
7. Substitute a Known-Good Compatible Control
When available and permitted by policy, connect a known-good compatible switch and repeat the test. Do not use unapproved accessories.
Expected outcome: Normal operation with the known-good control confirms the original switch or cable as the likely cause.
8. Check for Position-Dependent Cable Failure
Without stressing the cable, observe whether gentle repositioning changes operation. Intermittent response associated with normal cable movement is sufficient reason to remove the accessory from service.
Expected outcome: The control operates consistently without intermittent response. If not, it is replaced or referred for service.
9. Perform Final Functional Verification
After correction or accessory replacement, test the exposure control repeatedly using approved procedures and confirm proper system response, release behavior, and overall readiness.
Expected outcome: The switch consistently commands and releases fluoroscopy as expected. Troubleshooting can stop.
10. Escalate If Both Controls Remain Inoperative
If known-good controls fail, both control inputs are unavailable, or exposure response is inconsistent, stop external troubleshooting.
Expected outcome: A system-level control fault is escalated before clinical use.
If the Problem Persists
Common external switch, cable, connector, and system-readiness causes have been ruled out. Remaining possibilities may include control-input circuitry, system communication, internal interface hardware, software state, or another service-level problem.
Remove the OEC Elite from service, label it Out of Service, and send it for repair or bench evaluation. Evaluate with appropriate GE Healthcare documentation and approved test equipment. Replace accessories only with approved compatible parts, and do not bypass exposure-control circuitry.
Return the system to service only after exposure controls respond consistently and all applicable imaging and safety checks are completed. Knowing when to stop external troubleshooting is proper troubleshooting.

An exposure switch that works only when its cable is positioned a certain way should be treated as failed, not temporarily acceptable.
