2. Confirm the Reported Leak Condition
Ask staff when the leak occurs:
- While the tank is filled but idle
- Only during an ultrasonic cleaning cycle

- After the drain valve is closed
- Continuously from beneath or behind the unit
Dry the exterior surfaces and surrounding counter area. With the unit unplugged, visually inspect for evidence of prior leakage, including dried residue, staining, moisture tracks, or pooled solution.
Expected outcome: The leak pattern is identified before additional testing.
If no evidence of leakage is found: Document the reported condition and proceed with a controlled fill observation before returning the device to use.
3. Inspect the Drain Hose and Discharge Routing
Check the externally accessible drain hose for:
- Cracks, splits, pinholes, stiffness, or discoloration
- Loose connection at the drain outlet
- Kinking, pulling, or tension on the hose
- Improper routing that allows fluid to run back toward the unit
- Drain hose end positioned where overflow or splashback may be mistaken for a unit leak

4. Check the Drain Valve Position and External Valve Area

6. Inspect the Tank Interior for Visible Damage
After the tank is drained, cool, and dry, inspect the bath interior under good lighting. Look for:
- Pitting or roughened areas in the bottom of the tank
- Pinholes, cracks, or corrosion-like damage
- Wear marks where the basket may have contacted the tank
- Damaged or missing protective coating on the basket feet

7. Perform a Controlled Static Fill Observation
Only when no obvious damaged hose, faulty valve, or tank defect has been identified, place the unplugged unit on a clean, dry surface with absorbent material positioned beneath and behind the cleaner.
Add water to the normal operating level. Leave the unit unplugged and observe the unit for active moisture from:
- The tank underside or case seam
- The drain valve area
- The drain hose connection
- Any accessible external plumbing location
Expected outcome: The unit remains dry while filled and stationary.
If leakage occurs while the unit is unplugged and idle: The issue is mechanical, involving the tank, drain valve, hose, or plumbing connection. Remove the unit from service and stop.
8. Determine Whether the Leak Is Cycle-Related
Do not operate the unit if any leak has already been confirmed.
If the unit remains completely dry during the unplugged static fill observation, and the original report occurred only during operation, the problem may be an intermittent leak, vibration-related plumbing issue, or fluid displacement during loading.
Run an operational test only when permitted by department procedure, with the device isolated from clinical use and monitored continuously. Stop the cycle immediately if any moisture appears.
Expected outcome: No solution escapes during operation or draining.

9. Verify Final Condition Before Return to Service
Return the device to service only when:
- No active leak is found during fill, cycle, and drain observation.
- The tank is visually intact.
- The drain valve closes and drains normally.
- The external drain hose is secure and undamaged.
- The unit and surrounding area remain dry.
- The reported cause has been identified and corrected, such as overfill or a loose external drain-hose setup.
Expected outcome: The cleaner operates without leakage and can be safely returned to clinical processing use.
If the leak source cannot be confidently identified: Do not return the unit to service.
If the Problem Persists
If leakage continues after external hose routing, valve closure, fill level, spillover, and visible tank condition have been evaluated, common external causes have been ruled out. The remaining concern is likely a failed drain valve, plumbing connection, fitting, or leaking tank assembly.
The device should be:
- Removed from service
- Labeled Out of Service
- Sent for repair or bench evaluation
Do not continue operating an ultrasonic cleaner with unresolved fluid leakage. Knowing when to stop and escalate is proper troubleshooting, especially when fluid may reach electrical components or contaminated solution may escape into the work area.
