1. Protect the Patient and Maintain Surgical Capability
Do not troubleshoot an unreliable ESU while it is required for an active procedure. Move electrosurgical needs to another verified system according to the clinical team's procedure and facility policy.
If there is smoke, unusual odor, excessive heat, liquid intrusion, visible damage, or evidence of electrical arcing, disconnect AC power and remove the unit from service immediately.

2. Confirm the Exact Startup Complaint
Ask staff what occurred when the power control was activated. Determine whether the ESG-410 remained completely blank, briefly powered and shut down, froze during startup, displayed a message, or started but was considered unusable.
Attempt startup only when the unit is safely removed from clinical use.
Expected outcome: The failure is reproduced or the original condition is clearly defined. If normal startup completes repeatedly, continue with functional verification before returning the unit to service.
3. Verify the AC Power Source
Confirm that the power cord is fully seated and the selected receptacle provides power. Test the receptacle using an approved method or compare operation from another known-good hospital-grade outlet.
Avoid extension cords, unapproved power strips, or questionable temporary power sources.
Expected outcome: Reliable AC power is available at the equipment connection. If the ESG-410 starts normally from a verified outlet, the external power source was the likely cause and troubleshooting can stop after final verification.
4. Inspect the Power Cord and External Connections
Inspect the detachable power cord, plug, strain relief, and accessible power-entry area for looseness, bent contacts, cuts, crushing, discoloration, contamination, or other damage.
Replace a questionable detachable cord with a compatible known-good cord when permitted.
Expected outcome: The power path is secure and undamaged. If replacing an externally damaged cord restores normal startup, document the correction and proceed to final testing.
5. Remove Nonessential External Accessories

7. Perform a Controlled Restart
After verifying power and external conditions, disconnect the unit from AC power if permitted by facility procedure, allow the normal shutdown state to establish, reconnect it to verified AC power, and perform one controlled startup.
Do not repeatedly power-cycle a unit that continually fails startup.
Expected outcome: The ESG-410 completes startup and reaches its normal ready state. If startup remains incomplete or the failure repeats, stop external troubleshooting.
8. Perform Final Functional Verification
If the generator now starts normally, inspect the controls and display, connect appropriate compatible accessories as applicable, verify that the device recognizes required connections, and perform the manufacturer-approved operational or return-to-service testing available to Clinical Engineering.
Do not test therapeutic output on a patient.

If the Problem Persists
If verified AC power, the power cord, external connections, accessories, and environmental conditions have been ruled out, the problem may involve an internal power, control, software, or startup subsystem requiring service-level evaluation.
Remove the ESG-410 from service, label it Out of Service, and send it for bench evaluation or authorized repair. Evaluate it using current Olympus service documentation and approved electrosurgical test equipment. Internal repair, software configuration, or component replacement should be performed only by qualified personnel.
After repair, complete the required functional, output, alarm, and electrical safety testing before returning the ESU to clinical use. Recognizing the point where external troubleshooting should stop is proper troubleshooting.
