Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

1. Ensure Patient Safety First

Do not troubleshoot an unreliable power source while the LIFEPAK 12 is connected to an active patient or serving as the only available defibrillator.

If the failure occurs during patient care:

Expected outcome: Patient care no longer depends on equipment with an unreliable power or charging system.

Continue Clinical Engineering troubleshooting only after the LIFEPAK 12 has been removed from active clinical use.

2. Identify the Exact Failure

Document whether the complaint involves:

Expected outcome: The problem is narrowed to incoming AC power, the adapter, its output connection, a specific battery, or the external charger.

3. Inspect for Damage or Unsafe Conditions

Disconnect the equipment from AC power and inspect:

Look for bent pins, cuts, crushed insulation, looseness, corrosion, contamination, unusual heat, swelling, discoloration, or burnt odor.

Do not use equipment showing electrical damage, overheating, liquid intrusion, or exposed conductors.

Expected outcome: No visible condition is present that requires immediate removal from service.

4. Verify the AC Outlet

Test the outlet with an approved outlet tester or another known-good device.

Confirm that:

Connect the adapter directly to a verified grounded outlet whenever possible.

Expected outcome: The adapter receives reliable AC input.

If normal operation returns, document the defective outlet or external power source and stop.

5. Verify the Correct Power Cord

11. Isolate the Batteries

If the Problem Persists

If verified outlets, power cords, output cables, connections, compatible batteries, and charger trays have been ruled out, the failure is likely within the AC adapter, charger, battery interface, or LIFEPAK 12 internal power circuitry.

Do not open the AC adapter, charger, or LIFEPAK 12 for unapproved internal troubleshooting. Recognizing when external checks are complete and escalating appropriately is proper troubleshooting.

Clinical Use Tip

Do not troubleshoot on an active patient. Move the patient to a backup device first to maintain therapy continuity.

Do not rely on AC power alone during patient care. Keep verified batteries installed and adequately charged so the LIFEPAK 12 can continue operating if the outlet, cord, or power adapter becomes disconnected.
