- Obtain another verified monitor/defibrillator immediately.
- Transfer monitoring and therapy capability when safe.
- Do not continue using the device if power stability is uncertain.
Expected outcome: Patient care no longer depends on equipment with an unreliable power or charging system.
Continue Clinical Engineering troubleshooting only after the LIFEPAK 12 has been removed from active clinical use.
2. Identify the Exact Failure
Document whether the complaint involves:
- AC adapter POWER indicator not illuminated
- LIFEPAK 12 not operating from external power
- BATT CHG indicator not illuminated
- Battery remaining discharged
- CHARGING indicator remaining on unusually long
- FAILED battery indicator
- Red SERVICE indicator on the AC adapter
- Intermittent charging when the cable is moved
- Failure of a separate battery charger or Battery Support System

3. Inspect for Damage or Unsafe Conditions

11. Isolate the Batteries
Test one battery at a time in each battery well.
Use a known-good, compatible, adequately discharged battery when available.
Determine whether:
- One battery repeatedly produces a FAILED indication.
- All batteries fail in one battery well.
- One battery charges normally while another does not.
- No known-good battery charges in either position.

12. Evaluate a Separate Battery Charger
When the complaint involves an external battery charger or Battery Support System:
- Verify its outlet and approved power cord.
- Inspect the battery tray and contacts.
- Confirm the correct tray is installed for the battery type.
- Test one known-good battery at a time.
- Compare behavior across available charging bays.
- Record all charger status or fault indicators.
The LIFEPAK 12 AC Power Adapter charges installed batteries but does not perform full battery maintenance; battery maintenance requires the appropriate Battery Support System.
Expected outcome: The problem is isolated to the battery, charger tray, individual bay, or charger assembly.
13. Perform a Controlled Operational Check
After correcting an external issue:
- Install verified batteries.
- Connect the AC adapter.
