Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Ensure Patient Safety First
Confirm the analyzer is not actively being used for patient testing.
If testing is needed immediately, have staff use another available urine analyzer or approved backup process.
Expected outcome: Troubleshooting is performed without delaying patient testing or risking incorrect result entry.
Verify the Reported Input Problem
Ask staff what is happening during use.
Check whether the issue involves:
- Blank display
- Dim or unreadable screen
- Frozen screen
- Keypad buttons not responding
- Incorrect characters or selections
- Operator ID entry failure
- Menu navigation failure
- Touch or button response only working intermittently
Expected outcome: The complaint is clearly identified before assuming device failure.
Check AC Power and Power-On Behavior
Verify the power adapter is connected securely to the analyzer and wall outlet.
Confirm the analyzer powers on normally.
Try a known-good outlet if the analyzer appears dead, dim, or unstable.
Expected outcome: The analyzer powers on with a visible startup sequence.
If the display returns to normal after restoring power, document the power issue and stop.
Inspect the External Power Supply
Check the power adapter and cable for loose strain relief, bent connector, cuts, or intermittent power when gently moved.

If operator ID entry fails only with barcode scanning, troubleshoot the barcode scanner, barcode quality, and operator ID format separately.
Expected outcome: The issue is isolated to the keypad/display or to an accessory/input workflow.
Check Menu Navigation
Navigate through basic menus without running a patient test.
Confirm that keys select the expected menu option and that the display updates correctly.
Expected outcome: Menu movement and selections match operator input.
If menu response is delayed, incorrect, or intermittent, remove the device from service.
Check for External Accessories or Printer Interference
If the analyzer is connected to a printer, barcode scanner, data cable, or interface accessory, disconnect nonessential accessories and restart the analyzer.

If the issue resolves after removing an accessory, inspect that accessory and cable before reconnecting it.
Confirm the Device Is Not in an Unexpected Mode
Verify the analyzer is not waiting for strip insertion, QC entry, operator ID, lot entry, or another required workflow step.
Expected outcome: The analyzer should accept input appropriate to the displayed prompt.
If the keypad works in other screens but not during one workflow, review the required entry format or lockout condition.
Check for Repeated Freezing or Rebooting
Observe whether the analyzer freezes, reboots, or becomes unresponsive after startup, after entering operator ID, or after beginning a test.
Expected outcome: The analyzer remains stable during normal menu use.
If freezing or rebooting repeats, remove the analyzer from service for bench evaluation.
Perform a Basic Functional Verification
Once the display and input appear normal, perform a non-patient functional check according to site policy.
This may include menu navigation, operator ID entry, QC workflow access, and verification that prompts display correctly.
Expected outcome: The analyzer accepts input consistently and displays prompts clearly.
If normal operation is confirmed, return the device to service per department policy.
If the Problem Persists
If the display, keypad, or operator input problem continues after power, outlet, accessory, contamination, and workflow checks have been completed, the likely cause is internal to the analyzer or keypad/display assembly.
The device should be:
- Removed from service
- Labeled Out of Service
- Sent for repair, vendor support, or bench evaluation
Knowing when to stop is proper troubleshooting. A urine analyzer with unreliable operator input should not be used for patient testing because incorrect selections, missed prompts, or unreadable results can create patient safety risk.

Do not troubleshoot operator input problems during active patient testing. Move testing to another analyzer or approved backup method first. A readable display and reliable input are required before the analyzer can be safely returned to clinical use.
