Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Protect Patient Testing and Samples
Do not depend on an analyzer that will not start or that shuts down unexpectedly. Redirect urgent specimens to another verified analyzer or approved laboratory testing pathway.
If shutdown occurs during sample processing, handle the affected specimen and result according to facility procedure.
Expected outcome: Patient testing continues without reliance on unstable equipment.
2. Confirm the Exact Power Failure
Determine whether the analyzer is completely dead, begins startup but stops, repeatedly restarts, shuts down only during use, or loses power when the cord or plug is moved.
Record any startup message, audible indication, or screen behavior.
Expected outcome: The power or startup condition is clearly characterized.
3. Inspect the Power Cord and Plug
Check the external power cord, plug, and analyzer connection for cuts, crushed areas, bent or damaged contacts, looseness, heat damage, or evidence of liquid exposure.

Expected outcome: The power cord and connections are physically intact and securely seated.
If replacing a damaged detachable cord with an approved known-good cord restores reliable operation, proceed to final verification.
4. Verify the AC Outlet
Confirm the wall outlet is energized using an appropriate approved method. Check whether the analyzer is connected through a switched outlet, power strip, isolation system, or other external source that may have lost power.
When permitted, test the analyzer from a known-good approved outlet.
Expected outcome: Stable AC power is available at the analyzer.
If moving to a verified outlet restores reliable startup and operation, document the infrastructure issue and continue with final verification.
5. Remove Unnecessary External Connections
If startup instability began after connecting an external accessory, network cable, or peripheral, disconnect nonessential external connections one at a time while the analyzer is safely out of clinical use.
Do not disconnect required safety-related components or open the analyzer.
Expected outcome: The analyzer starts normally with external accessories ruled out as contributing factors.
If a specific external connection causes the issue, keep that accessory or connection out of service and verify analyzer stability.
6. Check the Environment
Inspect for obvious excessive heat, blocked ventilation areas, liquid contamination, unusual odor, abnormal heat, or physical damage.
If there is evidence of burning, liquid intrusion, smoke, or excessive heat, stop immediately and remove the analyzer from service.
Expected outcome: No obvious environmental or physical condition is present that makes continued troubleshooting unsafe.
7. Attempt One Controlled Normal Startup
With stable external power confirmed and the analyzer disconnected from patient testing, perform a normal startup.
Observe the full process without repeatedly cycling power.
Expected outcome: The analyzer completes startup and reaches its normal ready state without restarting or shutting down.
If startup completes reliably, continue with functional verification.
8. Observe for Unexpected Shutdown
Allow the analyzer to remain powered while performing appropriate nonpatient functional checks. Watch for display blanking, restart, power interruption, unusual sound, odor, heat, or instability.
Expected outcome: The analyzer remains continuously powered and responsive.
If operation remains stable and required checks pass, troubleshooting can stop.
9. Complete Analyzer Readiness Verification
Confirm GEM PAK recognition, analyzer readiness, required quality status, network or output functions as applicable, and normal user-interface operation before return to service.
Expected outcome: The analyzer completes normal startup, remains powered, and satisfies required operational and quality checks.
If achieved, troubleshooting is complete.
10. Escalate Persistent Startup or Shutdown Problems
If the analyzer will not power on from a verified outlet, fails startup repeatedly, or shuts down unexpectedly after external causes are ruled out, remove it from service.
Do not open the analyzer or troubleshoot internal power supplies, boards, batteries, or computing hardware without approved service authorization.
Expected outcome: A likely internal power, computing, software, thermal, or electronic condition is referred for qualified service.
If the Problem Persists
External AC power, cord condition, outlet function, accessories, environment, and controlled restart have been evaluated. Remaining causes may include internal power conversion, internal connections, embedded computing hardware, software, thermal protection, or other service-level faults.
The analyzer should be:
- Removed from service
- Labeled Out of Service
- Sent for repair or bench evaluation
- Evaluated using appropriate Werfen documentation and approved test equipment
- Repaired or configured only by qualified personnel
Complete full operational, quality-control, and return-to-service verification after repair.
