The manual states that the system should be periodically inspected for electrical safety.
The manufacturer-listed grounding safety check is to measure resistance of the power cord ground from the plug to the IEC 60320 connector.
Manufacturer-listed limit: ground resistance must not exceed 0.1 ohm.
Important note: The manual states the SCD Express does not have an externally accessible ground on the device. The recommended grounding safety test is a resistance check of the power cord ground.

- The controller contains no user-serviceable parts except user maintenance covered in the manual. Other maintenance is for appropriately qualified service technical personnel.
- Do not run the controller without the fan screen installed.
- If a fuse blows a second time, the controller should be presumed defective and requires further service.
- If ground resistance exceeds 0.1 ohm or insulation integrity is compromised through mechanical damage, return the controller to a service center for testing and repair.
- Kendall does not recommend repair of printed circuit boards in the field.

Required Tools and Equipment

Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Confirm Device Status
Action: Confirm the SCD Express controller is not in active patient use before removing it for PM.
Expected outcome: Device is available for inspection and testing without interrupting therapy.
Why it matters: The SCD Express provides intermittent pneumatic compression for DVT/PE prevention support.
2. Identify the Device
Action: Record the model, serial number, asset number, and whether the unit has the optional battery pack installed.
Expected outcome: Device identification is documented before PM work begins.
3. External Visual Inspection
Action: Inspect the controller housing, front membrane panel, buttons, LEDs, ports A/B, bed hook, power cord, cord capture door, and tubing connection area.
Expected outcome: No cracked housing, damaged buttons, missing parts, damaged ports, or unsafe cord condition.
Remove from service if: Housing damage, liquid intrusion, damaged power cord, compromised insulation, damaged connectors, or missing safety-related parts are found.
4. Fan Screen and Ventilation Check
Action: Inspect the fan screen and vents for dust, lint, blockage, or damage.
Expected outcome: Fan screen is installed, clean, and vents are unobstructed.
If cleaning is needed: Unplug the controller and remove the battery pack before fan screen maintenance. Brush loose dirt/lint from the fan screen and reinstall it correctly.
Do not return to service if: Fan screen is missing, fan area is blocked, or the controller shows signs of overheating.
5. Cleaning
Action: Clean the controller cabinet with a soft cloth dampened with water. Use mild disinfectant and/or detergent if needed. Avoid excess fluid. Wipe dry afterward.
Expected outcome: Exterior is clean and dry.
Do not use: Liquid immersion, autoclaving, ETO sterilization, ammonium chloride, acetone, or aromatic solvents. The manual states these can damage the system/case.
6. Power Cord Ground Resistance Check
Action: Measure resistance of the power cord ground from the plug to the IEC 60320 connector.
Expected outcome: Ground resistance does not exceed 0.1 ohm.
Result field:

Remove from service if: Ground resistance exceeds 0.1 ohm or insulation integrity is compromised through mechanical damage.
7. Startup LED and Audible Alarm Check
Action: Plug the controller into a properly grounded hospital-grade receptacle and power it on.
Expected outcome: Controller beeps and flashes all LEDs during startup sequence.
Verify startup indicators:
- Port A Leg, Port A Foot, Port B Leg, Port B Foot, Vascular Refill, Battery Status 1-3 illuminate green
- Port A Leg, Port A Foot, Port B Leg, Port B Foot, Service Required, Battery Status 1 illuminate red
- Error Code / Test Mode indicators 1-8 illuminate red
- Audible alarm function is present
Remove from service if: LEDs fail, audible alarm does not function, or service-required indicator remains active.
8. Enter Test Access Mode
Action:
- Plug controller into AC line power.
- Do not run service test modes on battery power.
- Press Port A and Port B configuration buttons at the same time while turning controller on.
- Use Port A button to cycle through test modes.
- Use Port B button to initiate the selected test.
Expected outcome: Unit enters test access mode and Test Mode indicators can be selected.
9. Pressure Transducer Calibration Verification - Test Mode 04
Action: Perform Test Mode 04 before any calibration attempt. Connect a regulated precision air source accurate to ±0.1 mmHg over 0 to 130 mmHg to the Bladder #1 location at Port A.
Manufacturer-listed verification points:
- 0 mmHg
- 18 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
- 45 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
- 130 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
Expected outcome: For each range, Port A Leg and Port B Leg indicators illuminate green when supplied pressure is within the calibration range.
Do not recalibrate unless needed: The manual states the pressure transducer is highly precise and virtually drift-free, recalibration is rarely required, and Test Mode 04 should be performed before Test Mode 03.

10. Pressure Transducer Calibration - Test Mode 03, If Needed
Action: Only perform Test Mode 03 if calibration verification indicates calibration is needed and qualified personnel are performing the work.
Required pressure points:
- 0 mmHg
- 18 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
- 45 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
- 130 mmHg ±0.1 mmHg
Expected outcome: New calibration values are recorded into memory and unit returns to Test Access Mode.
Note: Factory calibration certification is void if the case is opened.
11. Leak Test - Test Mode 06
Action:
- Attach tubing set connected to leg sleeves wrapped around appropriately sized leg forms.
- Enter Test Access Mode.
- Select Test Mode 06.
- Press Port B to begin Leak Test.
Manufacturer-listed operation:
- Controller inflates all bladders for Port A to 45 mmHg.
- Controller vents down to 5-7 mmHg.
- Unit holds pressure for 40 seconds.
- Pressure is read at 20 seconds and 40 seconds.
- If significant pressure drop occurs over the 20-second period, a Low Pressure alarm is triggered.
- If Port A passes, the test repeats for Port B.
Expected outcome: No Low Pressure alarm during leak test. Unit beeps and returns to Test Access Mode.

Port A Leak Test = Pass / Fail
Port B Leak Test = Pass / Fail
12. General Function / Performance Test - Test Mode 07
Action:
- Attach tubing set connected to leg sleeves wrapped around appropriately sized leg forms.
- Enter Test Access Mode.
- Select Test Mode 07.
- Press Port B to begin.
- Follow prompts for Port A and Port B inflation cycles.
Expected outcome: Controller completes inflation cycle at Port A and Port B, verifies pump/valve performance, pressure delivery, and airflow through pneumatic circuit, then beeps and returns to Test Access Mode.
Result field:
Performance / General Function Test = Pass / Fail
13. Optional Battery Check, If Battery Equipped
Action: Verify battery indicators and charging behavior if the controller has the optional battery pack installed.
Manufacturer-listed battery details:
- Fully charged battery typically provides 6-8 hours of operation depending on sleeve configuration, sleeve application, and battery condition.
- New fully drained battery charges in approximately 4 hours with controller on standby.
- New fully drained battery charges in approximately 8 hours with controller powered on.
- Battery should be stored with at least 50% charge near 25°C / 77°F if prolonged storage is needed.
Expected outcome: Battery indicators behave normally and runtime is not extremely short.
Remove from service / service battery if: Battery runtime is extremely short, battery error occurs, battery cell failure is suspected, battery is damaged, or battery leakage is present.
14. Final Functional Startup Check
Action: Connect tubing and compatible garments or test sleeves. Start controller normally.
Expected outcome:
- Proper garment detection occurs.
- Correct port indicators illuminate green.
- Controller begins compression.
- No Service Required indicator.
- No unresolved alarm codes.
- No abnormal noise, overheating, or airflow issue.

- Controller is clean and dry
- Startup LED sequence and audible alarm function are present
- Power cord ground resistance is ≤ 0.1 ohm
- Pressure transducer calibration verification passes
- Leak Test passes
- General Function / Performance Test passes
- No unresolved alarm, service-required indicator, overheating, or abnormal pneumatic issue
- Battery check passes, if battery equipped and included in facility PM
Remove From Service Criteria
Remove from service if any of the following are found:
- Ground resistance exceeds 0.1 ohm
- Insulation integrity is compromised by mechanical damage
- Power cord, plug, or IEC connector is damaged
- Fan screen is missing or ventilation is blocked
- Controller shows signs of overheating
- Startup LEDs or audible alarm fail
- Service Required indicator remains active
- Pressure transducer calibration verification fails and cannot be corrected
- Leak Test fails
- General Function / Performance Test fails
- Fuse blows a second time after replacement
- Battery is damaged, leaking, or has persistent battery error
- Housing is cracked, damaged, or shows liquid intrusion
- Any persistent alarm or fault remains after troubleshooting
