Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Confirm Device Status

Action: Confirm the SCD Express controller is not in active patient use before removing it for PM.

Expected outcome: Device is available for inspection and testing without interrupting therapy.

Why it matters: The SCD Express provides intermittent pneumatic compression for DVT/PE prevention support.

2. Identify the Device

Action: Record the model, serial number, asset number, and whether the unit has the optional battery pack installed.

Expected outcome: Device identification is documented before PM work begins.

3. External Visual Inspection

Action: Inspect the controller housing, front membrane panel, buttons, LEDs, ports A/B, bed hook, power cord, cord capture door, and tubing connection area.

Expected outcome: No cracked housing, damaged buttons, missing parts, damaged ports, or unsafe cord condition.

Remove from service if: Housing damage, liquid intrusion, damaged power cord, compromised insulation, damaged connectors, or missing safety-related parts are found.

4. Fan Screen and Ventilation Check

Action: Inspect the fan screen and vents for dust, lint, blockage, or damage.

Expected outcome: Fan screen is installed, clean, and vents are unobstructed.

If cleaning is needed: Unplug the controller and remove the battery pack before fan screen maintenance. Brush loose dirt/lint from the fan screen and reinstall it correctly.

Do not return to service if: Fan screen is missing, fan area is blocked, or the controller shows signs of overheating.

5. Cleaning

Action: Clean the controller cabinet with a soft cloth dampened with water. Use mild disinfectant and/or detergent if needed. Avoid excess fluid. Wipe dry afterward.

Expected outcome: Exterior is clean and dry.

Do not use: Liquid immersion, autoclaving, ETO sterilization, ammonium chloride, acetone, or aromatic solvents. The manual states these can damage the system/case.

6. Power Cord Ground Resistance Check

Action: Measure resistance of the power cord ground from the plug to the IEC 60320 connector.

Expected outcome: Ground resistance does not exceed 0.1 ohm.

7. Startup LED and Audible Alarm Check

Action: Plug the controller into a properly grounded hospital-grade receptacle and power it on.

Expected outcome: Controller beeps and flashes all LEDs during startup sequence.

Verify startup indicators:

Remove from service if: LEDs fail, audible alarm does not function, or service-required indicator remains active.

8. Enter Test Access Mode

Action:

Expected outcome: Unit enters test access mode and Test Mode indicators can be selected.

9. Pressure Transducer Calibration Verification - Test Mode 04

Action: Perform Test Mode 04 before any calibration attempt. Connect a regulated precision air source accurate to ±0.1 mmHg over 0 to 130 mmHg to the Bladder #1 location at Port A.

Manufacturer-listed verification points:

Expected outcome: For each range, Port A Leg and Port B Leg indicators illuminate green when supplied pressure is within the calibration range.

12. General Function / Performance Test - Test Mode 07

Action:

Expected outcome: Controller completes inflation cycle at Port A and Port B, verifies pump/valve performance, pressure delivery, and airflow through pneumatic circuit, then beeps and returns to Test Access Mode.

13. Optional Battery Check, If Battery Equipped

Action: Verify battery indicators and charging behavior if the controller has the optional battery pack installed.
