Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status

Hillrom recommends annual preventive maintenance. The public IFU says the annual procedures include examination of overall condition, siderails, controls and motors, battery backup, brakes and casters, scale system, head-angle display, communication system, transport system and its batteries, mattress, and accessories. Only facility-authorized persons should service the bed.

The IFU gives an expected battery life of 3 years and lists earlier replacement conditions. The complete manufacturer PM schedule and service acceptance criteria are in controlled Service Manual 193588. This procedure keeps those controlled steps explicit rather than inventing unavailable limits. A different interval or scope requires the facility's documented AEM risk assessment and approval.

What This PM Procedure Covers

Required Tools and Equipment

Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Remove the Bed From Clinical Use

Action: Confirm the bed is not supporting a patient. Transfer the patient if necessary, label the bed unavailable, clean and disinfect it under the applicable IFU and facility policy, and unplug all power cords before service access.

Expected outcome: The bed is decontaminated, isolated from clinical use, and safe to inspect.

2. Verify Identity and Configuration

Action: Record asset tag, serial number, Product No. P7900, software/configuration information, width, installed core/pro/max/pro+ surface, powered transport, scale, Bed Exit, SideCom/nurse call, wireless/ReadyConnect, SafeView+, Experience Pod, HR/RR monitoring, auxiliary outlet, and other accessories.

Expected outcome: The physical configuration matches the CMMS record and the correct controlled procedures are available.

3. Review History and Due Maintenance

Action: Review previous PM, corrective repairs, fault history, recalls or field actions, software updates, battery dates, scale complaints, drive complaints, fluid ingress, and all open work. Confirm annual PM and applicable surface requirements are due.

Expected outcome: Known risks and outstanding work are identified before testing.

4. Inspect Overall Condition and Labels

Action: Inspect the frame, welds, sleep deck, covers, bumpers, push handles, equipment sockets, IV poles, restraint locations, drainage holders, line managers, cord holders, headboard, footboard, enclosure, and all safety/rating labels. Check for cracks, deformation, looseness, corrosion, sharp edges, fluid entry, or missing hardware.

Expected outcome: Structure and attachments are complete, secure, undamaged, and correctly labeled.

5. Inspect Power Components

Action: Inspect gray bed and optional white auxiliary-outlet cords, plugs, strain reliefs, inlets, grounding pins, and cord storage. Confirm there are no exposed conductors, crushed sections, heat damage, unauthorized adapters, or liquid contamination.

Expected outcome: Power components are intact and suitable for hospital-grade connection.

6. Inspect Siderails and Safety Hardware

Action: Raise and lower every siderail. Check hinges, pivots, latches, dampers, handles, gaps, fasteners, cables, controls, and optional IllumiGuide handgrips. Apply reasonable movement at each locked rail and confirm positive latching.

Expected outcome: Each siderail moves smoothly, locks securely, releases correctly, and has no unsafe damage or pinch condition.

7. Test Controls, Lockouts, Motors, and Articulation

Action: Test caregiver, patient, pendant, and touchscreen controls as equipped. Verify lockouts. Run bed up/down, head, knee, foot, Auto Contour, Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, Boost, chair/flat, and foot extension through their intended ranges without exceeding the two-minute-on/eighteen-minute-off motor duty cycle.

Expected outcome: Every enabled control commands the correct smooth movement; lockouts work; motors stop correctly; and there is no binding, abnormal noise, drift, or unintended motion.

8. Test CPR and Obstacle Detect

Action: Test each CPR release in a safe unloaded configuration and restore the head section. Exercise Obstacle Detect using the approved non-damaging method in the current procedure; never place a person beneath the frame.

Expected outcome: CPR lowers the head section and resets correctly. Obstacle Detect stops/reverses lowering as specified, with its sensors and base covers unobstructed.

9. Check Head-Angle and Position Indications

Action: Compare the head-angle display and Line-of-Site indicator with a calibrated reference at the positions required by the controlled procedure. Verify lowest-position, brake-not-set, service-required, and other position indicators.

Expected outcome: Angle and position indications meet the current service-manual tolerances and agree with bed position.

10. Inspect Casters, Brakes, and Steering

Action: Inspect caster tread, swivels, stems, bearings, pedals, linkages, and steering hardware. On a level clear floor, verify Neutral, Steer, and Brake. Apply force from both ends with brakes set.

Expected outcome: Casters roll and swivel without damage; steering tracks correctly; and brakes prevent unsafe movement.

11. Test Bed-Frame Battery Backup

Action: Confirm the bed charges normally, then unplug it. Verify the touchscreen reports On Battery Backup and operate permitted bed articulation from caregiver controls. Reconnect AC and confirm the battery indication clears and charging resumes. Review installation/date and battery behavior.

Expected outcome: Battery backup and its indicators work correctly. Replace through the authorized procedure if expected life has been reached, the indicator does not illuminate within 3 minutes after AC connection, it remains flashing after 12 hours on AC, or performance is otherwise unacceptable.

12. Test IntelliDrive Powered Transport, If Equipped

Action: Inspect the drive wheel, handle controls, Transport Pod, cables, battery indicator, and mechanical condition. In a safe clear area, test forward, reverse, stopping, steering, enable/release behavior, and manual transport fallback under the controlled procedure.

Expected outcome: Powered transport responds predictably and stops safely. Escalate for battery replacement if power shuts down before the final indicator flashes or repeated transports of four hours or less drive the batteries critically low. Charge new transport batteries for at least 20 hours before use.

13. Verify Scale and Bed Exit

Action: Remove unintended equipment from the frame, zero the scale, and verify accuracy/repeatability with calibrated weights at the points required by Service Manual 193588. Check Bed Exit modes, arming/disarming, sensitivity, alarm audio/visual indications, silence/reset, and restored state after AC interruption as applicable.

Expected outcome: Scale and Bed Exit pass all current controlled tolerances and alarm checks.

14. Check Communication, Alerts, and Optional Systems

Action: Inspect communication cables/connectors and test nurse call/SideCom. Verify touchscreen, speakers, audible and verbal alerts, SafeView+, wireless location/asset status, ReadyConnect, night light, USB, auxiliary outlet, Experience Pod, and HR/RR monitoring only when installed and under their applicable procedures.

Expected outcome: Installed communication and optional systems function without unresolved fault, lost alarm path, damaged cable, or unsafe outlet behavior.

15. Inspect the Mattress and Surface System

Action: Identify the installed surface and inspect cover, seams, zipper, fire barrier where applicable, foam/air sections, hoses, connectors, retention, inflation, therapies, blower, alarms, and contamination. Follow the separate surface manual; use Service Manual 209197 for a P7924A pro+ non-integrated surface.

Expected outcome: The compatible mattress is correctly installed, clean, intact, dry, supportive, and fully functional with no puncture, tear, fluid ingress, bottoming, leak, or surface alarm.

16. Inspect Accessories

Action: Inspect every installed accessory for compatibility, secure attachment, damage, load limits, cable/line clearance, and correct operation. Remove unauthorized or unsafe accessories.

Expected outcome: Accessories are approved, secure, functional, and do not interfere with bed motion or patient safety.

17. Complete Controlled Service and Electrical-Safety Tests

Action: Using Service Manual 193588, complete all remaining annual diagnostics, calibrations, fastener/adjustment checks, service-tool tests, and configuration-specific acceptance tests. Perform the electrical-safety tests below and record actual readings against the current controlled limits.

Expected outcome: The complete manufacturer schedule passes with traceable test equipment and no substituted or invented acceptance limits.

18. Restore, Final-Test, and Document

Action: Reassemble all covers and guards, remove tools and weights, restore the approved configuration, reconnect power/communication, charge batteries, and repeat a final functional and alarm check. Document readings, parts, corrective work, software/configuration, options tested, and disposition.

Expected outcome: The Centrella is clean, complete, fully functional, and either returned to service or clearly removed from service.

Electrical Safety Testing

The Centrella Smart+ is Class I, Type B medical electrical equipment. Inspect all mains cords, plugs, grounding pins, inlets, auxiliary outlet, strain reliefs, accessible conductive parts, and liquid barriers before energizing the bed. Test the exact installed configuration according to Service Manual 193588, facility policy, and the facility's adopted medical-electrical standard.

The public IFU does not publish the complete annual electrical-safety method or numeric acceptance limits. Do not copy the VersaCare limit or invent a generic value for this model. Record analyzer identification, test method, current controlled limits, protective-earth resistance, leakage/touch-current readings, polarity/supply conditions where required, and pass/fail disposition.
