Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status
Hillrom recommends annual preventive maintenance and testing. The public IFU directs particular attention to siderail latches, siderail dampers, caster brakes, electrical components, power cords and grounding, self-centering controls, cable entanglement, lockouts, sleep-surface cover integrity, and intake/exhaust filters. Only facility-authorized personnel should perform calibration or PM.
The current IFU lists a 3-year expected life for the main and IntelliDrive batteries. It also lists a 5-year expected life for the integrated surface excluding its top cover, 30,000 hours for the blower motor, and 2 years for the removable surface. Complete annual steps and model-specific acceptance limits remain controlled by Service Manual 171748. Do not extend the interval or omit listed work outside the facility's approved AEM program and documented risk assessment.

Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Remove the Bed From Clinical Use
Action: Confirm no patient depends on the bed, transfer the patient when necessary, label the bed unavailable, clean and disinfect it under the applicable instructions, unplug all power cords, and activate the lockouts before service access.
Expected outcome: The bed is decontaminated, isolated from clinical use, and protected against accidental battery-powered movement.
2. Verify Identity and Configuration
Action: Record asset tag, serial number, Product No. P7500, software/configuration information, installed surface model, width, scale, Bed Exit, SideCom/nurse call, SafeView, wireless/ReadyConnect, IntelliDrive, Experience Pod, StayInPlace, Chair Egress, pulmonary therapies, auxiliary outlet, and accessories.
Expected outcome: The physical configuration matches the CMMS record and the correct serial-specific instructions and test path are identified.
3. Review History and Scheduled Items
Action: Review previous PM, repairs, faults, recalls/field actions, software updates, battery dates, surface/blower hours, scale/drive complaints, fluid ingress, and open corrective work. Determine whether any life-limited components or option-specific tasks are due.
Expected outcome: Annual, condition-based, and life-limited requirements are known before testing.
4. Inspect Overall Condition and Labels
Action: Inspect the base and upper frame, welds, sleep deck, covers, bumpers, push handles, headboard, footboard, equipment sockets, IV poles, restraint points, drainage holders, line management, cord storage, hardware, and safety/rating labels. Look for cracks, deformation, corrosion, loose or missing parts, sharp edges, contamination, or fluid entry.
Expected outcome: Structure and attachments are complete, secure, undamaged, and correctly labeled.
5. Inspect Power and Electrical Components
Action: Inspect each power cord, plug, grounding pin, strain relief, inlet, optional outlet, communication cable, equipotential connection when fitted, and accessible electrical cover. Check cord routing throughout full articulation for crushing, pinching, or entanglement.
Expected outcome: Electrical components are intact, securely routed, properly grounded, and free of heat, liquid, or insulation damage.
6. Inspect Siderails, Latches, and Dampers
Action: Raise and lower every siderail. Inspect hinges, pivots, latches, dampers, cables, fasteners, handles, gaps, and controls. Check dampers for oil leakage and confirm positive locking by applying reasonable movement at each raised rail.
Expected outcome: Siderails move smoothly, lower in a controlled manner, latch securely, and show no unsafe damage, loose hardware, oil leak, or pinch condition.
7. Test Controls and Lockouts
Action: Test caregiver, patient, pendant, foot, and touchscreen controls as equipped. Verify each momentary control returns to off/neutral when released and activates only its intended function. Apply and verify all lockouts.
Expected outcome: Controls respond correctly without sticking or unintended movement; all lockouts inhibit the designated functions.
8. Test Motors and Articulation
Action: Test bed up/down, head, knee, foot, foot extension/retraction, Auto Contour, Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg, Boost, flat, FullChair, Chair Egress, Stand Assist, and SlideGuard functions that are installed. Observe cables, hoses, clearances, motors, and mechanisms while moving, and respect the two-minute-on/eighteen-minute-off articulation duty cycle.
Expected outcome: Every installed articulation reaches its controlled range smoothly and stops correctly, with no binding, drift, collision, overload, abnormal sound, or cable/hose entanglement.
9. Test CPR and Obstacle Detect
Action: In a safe unloaded configuration, test each CPR release, confirm appropriate head-section lowering/surface response, release/reset, and subsequent powered movement. Test Obstacle Detect using the approved non-damaging method; never place a person beneath the frame.
Expected outcome: CPR operates and resets correctly. Obstacle Detect responds as specified with sensors and base covers unobstructed.
10. Verify Angle and Position Indications
Action: Compare the displayed head angle and Line-of-Site indicators with a calibrated reference at the positions required by the controlled procedure. Verify lowest-position, brake-not-set, service-required, and other configuration-specific indicators.
Expected outcome: Angle and position indications agree with actual bed position and meet Service Manual 171748 tolerances.
11. Inspect Casters, Brakes, and Steering
Action: Inspect caster treads, swivels, stems, bearings, pedals, linkages, fifth wheel/steering components, and hardware. On a level clear floor, verify Neutral, Steer, and Brake, and apply force from both ends with brakes set.
Expected outcome: Casters roll and swivel smoothly; steering tracks correctly; and the braking system prevents unsafe movement.
12. Test Main Battery Backup
Action: Confirm normal AC charging indication, then unplug the bed and operate permitted articulation from caregiver controls. Verify battery/AC indications and reconnect mains. Review the battery date and condition.
Expected outcome: Backup power and charging indications operate correctly. Replace the battery through the authorized procedure at its three-year expected life or sooner if the indicator fails to illuminate within 3 minutes of AC connection, fails to increase its illuminated LEDs within 12 hours on AC, or fails controlled testing.
13. Test IntelliDrive Transport, If Equipped
Action: Inspect the drive wheel, transport handles/controls, drive box, cables, mechanical release, and battery indication. In a clear safe area, test enable, forward, reverse, steering, stopping, release, and manual transport fallback using the controlled procedure.
Expected outcome: Powered transport responds predictably and stops safely. Replace batteries if the system shuts down before the final charge indication flashes. Charge replacement batteries for at least 20 hours before use.
14. Verify Scale, Bed Exit, and Alerts
Action: Remove unintended equipment, zero the scale, and test accuracy/repeatability with calibrated weights at every required point. Test Bed Exit modes, arming/disarming, alarm audio/visual indications, silence/reset, brake-not-set alert, and other installed safety alerts.
Expected outcome: Scale and alert systems meet current controlled tolerances and indicate each simulated condition correctly.
15. Check Communication and Optional Systems
Action: Inspect connectors and test nurse call/SideCom, SafeView, wireless/ReadyConnect, room interface, entertainment controls, USB, auxiliary outlet, Experience Pod, and other installed electronic options using their applicable procedures.
Expected outcome: Installed communication and optional systems function without an unresolved fault, missing alarm path, unsafe outlet, damaged cable, or configuration mismatch.
16. Inspect and Test the Surface
Action: Identify the surface model and inspect its top/removable cover, seams, zipper, retention, internal condition as authorized, hoses, connectors, filters, blower, inflation, therapies, sensors, CPR response, and alarms. Clean intake/exhaust filters and replace due or damaged items under the applicable surface instructions. For P7540, use IFU 216321.
Expected outcome: The surface is compatible, clean, dry, intact, secure, and fully functional without bottoming, air leak, fluid ingress, blocked filter, blower fault, or unresolved surface alarm.
17. Complete Controlled Service and Electrical-Safety Tests
Action: Using Service Manual 171748, complete all remaining annual diagnostics, calibration, fastener/adjustment, lubrication, filter, service-tool, and configuration-specific acceptance tests. Perform electrical safety as described below and record actual readings against current controlled limits.
Expected outcome: The complete annual schedule passes using calibrated equipment and model-specific criteria without substituted or invented limits.
18. Restore, Final-Test, and Document
Action: Reinstall covers and guards, remove tools/weights, restore the approved configuration, reconnect power and communication, charge batteries, and repeat a final function and alarm check. Document readings, parts, filters, battery/surface status, corrective work, options tested, and disposition.
Expected outcome: The Progressa is clean, complete, current on maintenance, and either returned to service or clearly removed from service.
Electrical Safety Testing
The Progressa is Class I, internally powered, Type B medical electrical equipment. Inspect mains cords, plugs, grounding pins, inlets, auxiliary outlets, strain reliefs, accessible conductive parts, electrical covers, and liquid barriers before energizing the bed. Test the exact installed bed/surface/accessory configuration according to Service Manual 171748, facility policy, and the facility's adopted medical-electrical standard.
The public IFU requires attention to proper grounding but does not publish the complete annual analyzer method or numeric limits. Do not copy a limit from another Hillrom bed or invent one. Record analyzer identification, test method, current controlled limits, protective-earth resistance, leakage/touch-current readings, outlet tests when applicable, and pass/fail disposition.
