Manual Reference

Covidien / Medtronic Newport HT70 Ventilator Operator's Manual for the Plus model, document 10157030C00. Confirm the exact HT70, HT70S, or HT70 Plus configuration; software; on-airway flow sensor; oxygen monitor and sensor; low-flow reservoir or air/oxygen mixer; Power Pac and internal backup battery; AC/DC supplies; circuit; mount; and accessories before service.

Support notice: Medtronic states that support, service, and spare-parts availability ended July 1, 2025 for specified Newport HT70 Plus models. Verify the affected model and serial number, current parts availability, authorized-service options, recalls, and field actions before beginning scheduled work.

Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status

The manual restricts preventive maintenance, calibration, OVP, internal repair, and service work to Covidien-trained or factory-authorized personnel. If the required parts, current service information, or qualified support are unavailable because of product-support status, remove the device from service rather than extending use without an approved risk decision. Any changed activity or interval belongs under the facility's approved AEM program and documented risk assessment.

What This PM Procedure Covers

Required Tools and Equipment

Safety: Remove the ventilator from patient use and provide alternate ventilation before maintenance or testing. Disconnect external power and oxygen before authorized internal work. Do not open the ventilator or attempt calibration, OVP, battery replacement, or other service procedures without the required Covidien/Medtronic training and documentation.

Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Remove the Ventilator From Clinical Use

Action: Confirm no patient is connected, provide alternate ventilation, stop ventilation, shut down safely when required, label the unit unavailable, and clean or disinfect the ventilator and reusable circuit components.

Expected outcome: Maintenance can proceed without interrupting therapy or exposing personnel to contamination.

2. Verify Identity, Configuration, and Support Status

Action: Record asset tag, serial number, exact HT70-family configuration, software revision, operating hours, flow-sensor option, O2 monitor and sensor, oxygen accessories, battery identifiers/ages, power supplies, circuit, mount, and accessories. Review repairs, alarms, Quick Checks, OVP reports, replacement dates, recalls, field actions, and whether the serial number remains supportable.

Expected outcome: The ventilator matches its CMMS record and all applicable intervals, parts, procedures, and support limitations are identified.

3. Perform the Physical Inspection

Action: Inspect the enclosure, handle, touchscreen, membrane buttons, alarm LEDs, speaker openings, main-flow outlet, proximal-pressure connector and tubing, flow-sensor connector/cable, fresh-gas intake, oxygen accessories, exhaust, air-intake cover, cooling openings, data ports, AC/DC connectors, supplies, cords, strain reliefs, batteries, circuit, exhalation valve, mount, brackets, and hardware. Check for cracks, contamination, corrosion, fluid entry, loose parts, damaged pins, exposed conductors, or obstructed airflow.

Expected outcome: The complete system is clean, legible, secure, and free of visible electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, or mounting hazards.

4. Inspect and Replace Routine Filters

Action: Inspect the disposable air-intake filter through its cover. Replace it when most of the surface is no longer white; never reverse or reuse it. Inspect the proximal inline filter weekly and replace it immediately when wet, contaminated, damaged, or occluded and at least every three months. Confirm extra proximal filters are available.

Expected outcome: Clean, dry, new or serviceable filters are correctly installed with no Check Circuit or Prox Line condition.

5. Review Battery Care

Action: Inspect the Power Pac and internal backup battery status, housings, contacts, retention, age, and service history. Keep the unit connected to approved external power whenever practical. Verify charge indications, battery-time estimate, and uninterrupted operation when external power is removed. Route overdue or abnormal batteries for authorized service.

Expected outcome: Both battery systems are intact, charged, securely retained, correctly indicated, and able to support a normal power transition without shutdown.

6. Perform the Six- or Twelve-Month Quick Check Setup

Action: Inspect the test lung and circuit for leaks and the AC supply for damage. Connect external power and confirm its indicator. Power on and verify the audible alarm and LEDs during self-test. Install the circuit, exhalation valve, and on-airway flow sensor when used. Apply the standard test settings from the current manual.

Expected outcome: Startup completes normally and the ventilator, circuit, test lung, power, and standard settings are ready for the complete Quick Check.

7. Test External-Power Loss, Alarms, and Indicators

Action: Disconnect external power and verify the audible/visual No External Power alarm, extinguished external-power indicator, displayed message, and continued battery ventilation. Exercise alarm silence/reset and reconnect power. Perform the manual's high-pressure and low-pressure/disconnection alarm checks and verify the handle LEDs, audible alarm, message, breath termination when applicable, reset, and recovery.

Expected outcome: Power transfer is uninterrupted and every tested alarm, message, indicator, silence/reset, and recovery function operates correctly.

8. Check Pressure, PEEP, Volume, Minute Volume, and Rate

Action: Complete the Quick Check pressure-gauge and PEEP assessment and the volume, minute-volume, and respiratory-rate monitor checks using the current standard settings and test lung. Record all displayed values and pass/fail results rather than substituting acceptance limits from a different manual revision.

Expected outcome: The pressure display follows each breath and all monitored pressure, volume, minute-volume, and rate results meet the current manual's Quick Check criteria.

9. Check the Power Pac and Backup Battery

Action: Complete the Quick Check battery sequence for the Power Pac and secondary internal backup battery, following the displayed and manual instructions. Confirm the ventilator continues operating during each intended transition and that battery alarms/messages appear and clear correctly.

Expected outcome: Both batteries pass the prescribed sequence and the complete Quick Check is documented as passed.

10. Run the Circuit Check

Action: Configure the intended patient circuit without the air/oxygen entrainment mixer attached to the fresh-gas intake. Start Circuit Check, occlude the patient end when prompted, then open it when prompted. Correct connections or try another circuit if the test fails, then repeat.

Expected outcome: The display reports Circuit Check PASSED. A repeated failure requires alternate ventilation and removal from service.

11. Complete the 24-Month Replacement Package

Action: Through authorized service, replace the air-intake and proximal inline filters, primary integrated Power Pac, secondary internal backup battery, coin battery, installed oxygen sensor, and cooling-fan filter. Confirm exact part applicability by configuration and support status; record part numbers, lots, dates, and disposal.

Expected outcome: Every due 24-month component is correctly replaced with an approved, available part and no overdue item remains.

12. Perform Authorized Calibration and OVP

Action: Have a Covidien-trained or factory-authorized provider perform the full calibration and Operational Verification Procedure using certified test equipment, medical oxygen, the correct circuit/flow sensor, and the controlled service manual. Include pressure, flow/volume, oxygen, battery, alarm, safety, and HT70 Plus expiratory-flow-sensor tests applicable to the installed configuration.

Expected outcome: All calibration and OVP items pass and a complete authorized test record is attached to the CMMS work order.

13. Complete 15,000-Hour / Four-Year Maintenance

Action: When either threshold is reached, route the device for the comprehensive manufacturer maintenance described in the controlled service manual. Verify required kits, pump or other service parts, current support, and authorized provider availability before the due date.

Expected outcome: Comprehensive service is completed at the earlier threshold with required parts and successful follow-up OVP, or the unsupported ventilator is removed from service.

14. Perform Electrical Safety Testing

Action: Apply the current authorized service procedure and facility policy to the exact HT70 Plus, external power supply, accessories, device class, and applied-part configuration. Record the analyzer, method, governing limits, and all applicable measurements after scheduled service or repair.

Expected outcome: Every required electrical-safety measurement passes its documented criterion for the exact configuration.

15. Restore and Make the Return-to-Service Decision

Action: Reinstall covers, filters, batteries, approved accessories, and the intended circuit. Clean surfaces, rerun Circuit Check and the Quick Check after work affecting performance, verify oxygen monitoring/calibration when installed, confirm charge state and absence of alarms, and review every service report and support limitation. Document parts, results, corrective work, and final status.

Expected outcome: The HT70 Plus is complete, current, fully verified, and formally returned to service—or clearly quarantined when any requirement or support need remains unresolved.

Electrical Safety Testing

The public operator manual requires authorized calibration and OVP but does not publish one universal electrical-safety limit for every HT70 Plus power-supply and accessory combination. Use the controlled service manual and the facility's approved analyzer method for the exact configuration. Do not copy limits from another Newport or Puritan Bennett ventilator.
