Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Remove Stretcher From Patient Use
Action: Remove the stretcher from patient use and place it in a safe work area. Apply brakes before inspection.
Expected outcome: Stretcher is safe to inspect without patient risk.
2. Verify Asset and Configuration
Action: Confirm asset tag, serial number, model, and installed options. Identify whether the unit has optional electric lift/litter, optional scale, optional gatch, optional restraints, IV pole, oxygen holder, foot supports, or Prime X components.
Expected outcome: PM checks match the actual installed configuration.
3. Inspect Frame and Fasteners
Action: Inspect frame, litter structure, fasteners, mounting hardware, accessory brackets, and visible weldments. Tighten or repair only as allowed by facility policy and service procedure.
Expected outcome: Fasteners are secure, mounting hardware is intact, and no structural damage is found.
4. Inspect Siderails
Action: Raise and lower each siderail. Confirm smooth movement and secure latching in the full-up position.
Expected outcome: Siderails move correctly and latch securely.
Remove from service if: A siderail will not latch, releases unexpectedly, binds severely, or has damaged latch hardware.
5. Inspect Casters, Brakes, and Steering
Action: Inspect all casters for secure mounting, smooth swivel, debris, wax buildup, flat spots, damage, or noisy operation. Engage the brake pedal and confirm all casters lock. Test steer function.
Expected outcome: Casters are secure, clean, swivel properly, brakes hold, and steer function works correctly.
Why it matters: The manual specifically lists caster locking, caster swivel, wax/debris removal, and steer function as PM checklist items.
6. Check Fifth Wheel Operation
Action: Engage and disengage the fifth wheel and confirm proper tracking/steering behavior. Lubricate where required.
Expected outcome: Fifth wheel engages, retracts, and operates normally.
7. Check Fowler, Gatch, Trendelenburg, and Reverse Trendelenburg
Action: Raise and lower the Fowler. If equipped, operate the gatch. Operate Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg from all available locations.
Expected outcome: Fowler operates and latches properly, optional gatch works correctly, and Trendelenburg/reverse Trendelenburg functions operate properly from all locations.
8. Check Hydraulic System
Action: Inspect hydraulic connections for leaks. Raise the litter and confirm the hydraulic jacks hold without drifting.
Expected outcome: No hydraulic leaks are present and the stretcher height holds properly.
Remove from service if: Hydraulic drift, visible leakage, or failed lift/lower operation is found.
9. Inspect Mattress, Skins, and Patient Surface
Action: Inspect mattress cover for rips, cracks, fluid intrusion, or damaged seams. Inspect stretcher skins for cracks. For Prime X options, inspect Fowler skin, foot skin, head tray, foot tray, cassette holder, and related surfaces.
Expected outcome: Patient support surfaces are intact and cleanable.
10. Inspect Optional Accessories
Action: Check optional body restraints, IV pole, oxygen bottle holder, foot supports, pump rack, trays, and mounting hardware if installed.
Expected outcome: Accessories are intact, secure, and function normally.
11. Check Optional Electric Lift/Litter Components
Action: If equipped, inspect cables for wear or pinching, inspect power cord and plug, confirm electrical connections are tight, confirm grounds are secure to the frame, and test electric functions from patient siderail controls and foot-end nursing controls where installed.
Expected outcome: No damaged cables or power components are found, controls operate correctly, and all grounds are secure.
12. Check Optional Scale System
Action: If equipped, confirm batteries are sufficiently charged, display housing is intact, load cells are intact, and scale is calibrated properly. Recalibrate if necessary.
Expected outcome: Scale powers on, display is intact, load cells are not damaged, and scale calibration is acceptable.
Electrical Safety Testing if applicable
Electrical safety testing applies to stretchers with optional electrical equipment. The manual lists the optional electric lift/litter and optional scale system as medical electrical equipment requiring EMC precautions.

PM Passes When
- Fasteners and structure are secure.
- Siderails latch and release properly.
- Brakes lock all casters.
- Casters are secure and swivel properly.
- Steer and fifth wheel functions operate properly.
- Fowler, optional gatch, Trendelenburg, and reverse Trendelenburg operate properly.
- No hydraulic leaks are present.
- Hydraulic jacks hold properly without drift.
- Mattress, skins, accessories, and mounting hardware are intact.
- Optional electrical equipment passes inspection and electrical safety checks.
- Optional scale system is functional and calibrated properly.
Remove From Service If
- Brakes, steering, siderails, hydraulics, or patient support surfaces are unsafe.
- Electrical cord, plug, grounding, cables, or controls are damaged.
- Ground impedance or leakage current fails the manufacturer-listed limit.
- Hydraulic jacks drift or leak.
- Scale is inaccurate and cannot be corrected.
- Any condition creates patient, staff, transport, fall, electrical, or positioning risk.
