Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status
Stryker lists preventive maintenance annually for the ProCuity Bed Series. The manual instructs the technician to remove the bed from service before inspection and states that more frequent maintenance may be necessary based on product usage.

The annual PM checklist separately lists replacement of the bed batteries. The difference between the two-year expected battery service life and annual battery replacement checklist should be reviewed with Stryker or addressed through approved facility policy rather than silently changing the checklist.
Service procedures throughout the manual generally instruct the technician to verify proper operation before returning the product to service.
If the facility changes the annual interval or modifies the manufacturer-listed activities, document the change under the facility’s approved Alternative Equipment Maintenance program, risk assessment, maintenance history, and applicable regulatory requirements.

The maintenance manual specifically identifies an inclinometer for angle calibration when the main control board has been replaced. Routine annual Fowler-angle verification may use the bed indication and facility-approved measurement equipment.
Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Remove the Bed From Service
Action
- Remove the bed from clinical use.
- Confirm that no patient is on the bed.
- Clean and disinfect the exterior and support surface as applicable.
- Record the model and serial number. The serial-number label is below the headboard at the head end.
Expected Outcome
The bed is clean, safely isolated, and ready for inspection.
2. Inspect the Frame and Hardware
Action
Inspect for:
- Loose or missing fasteners
- Damaged welds or structural components
- Cracks or splits in the headboard, footboard, or siderail panels
- Damaged head-end or foot-end litter bumpers
- Damaged Foley bag hooks
- Damaged bed extender or motion-interrupt components
- Oil leakage from the Fowler dampener
Tighten accessible loose hardware when appropriate. Escalate damaged structural components for repair.
Expected Outcome
All hardware is secure, and no structural damage, fluid leakage, or unsafe condition is present.
3. Inspect the Mattress and Support Surface
Action
Inspect the mattress cover for:
- Rips
- Cracks
- Open seams
- Fluid intrusion
- Other damage that could affect cleaning or patient support
Inspect powered mattress connections when installed.
Expected Outcome
The support surface is intact and suitable for clinical use.
4. Test Brakes and Casters
Action
- Apply the brake pedal.
- Push the bed to confirm that all casters lock.
- Confirm the footboard and head-end siderails indicate or flash when the brakes are not applied.
- Release the brakes.
- Confirm the steer caster locks and unlocks correctly.
- For electric-brake-equipped beds, test brake application and release from the footboard and siderail controls.
- For Secure Connect-equipped beds, confirm the connected status appears when the brakes are applied.
Expected Outcome
The bed remains stationary with brakes applied, rolls normally when released, and all brake and steer indicators operate correctly.
5. Inspect and Test Siderails
Action
- Raise and lower each siderail.
- Confirm each siderail locks securely in its highest and intermediate positions.
- Inspect the siderail controls for cracks, worn labels, damaged buttons, or other degradation.
- Test all head-end siderail functions, including LEDs.
- Confirm all siderail status lights operate.
Expected Outcome
All siderails move smoothly, latch securely, and all controls and indicators respond correctly.
6. Test CPR Release
Action
- Raise the Fowler.
- Activate the Fowler CPR release from both sides of the bed.
- Confirm that the Fowler lowers as intended.
- Reset the Fowler and verify powered operation afterward.
Expected Outcome
Both CPR releases operate correctly, and normal Fowler operation is restored after testing.
7. Test Bed Motions
Action
Operate the full available range of:
- Bed height up and down
- Fowler up and down
- Gatch or knee section up and down
- Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg, when equipped
- Bed extender functions
- Any programmed or specialty motion functions
Confirm that the motion interrupt below the bed extender operates.
Expected Outcome
All motions are smooth, correctly directed, and stop when released. The motion-interrupt system responds correctly.
8. Verify Fowler Angle
Action
- Move the Fowler through its operating range.
- Confirm Fowler angle accuracy across the manufacturer-listed range of 0° through 65°.
- Recalibrate the angle through the service menu if indicated.
Expected Outcome
The Fowler angle indication corresponds with actual Fowler position throughout the listed range.
9. Calibrate the Scale and Bed Exit System
Action
- Access the service menu.
- Select the calibration function appropriate for the installed display.
- Perform scale calibration using calibrated test weights and the on-screen prompts.
- Calibrate or verify the Bed Exit system.
- Confirm the scale zeros properly and produces stable, repeatable readings.
Expected Outcome
Scale readings are accurate and stable, and the Bed Exit system responds correctly.

10. Test Controls, Indicators, and Night Light

11. Test Nurse Call
Action
- Connect the bed to an approved nurse-call test device or facility headwall interface.
- Activate nurse-call functions from each available control location.
- Confirm the call is received and clears correctly.
- Confirm bed audio functions when supported by the installed room-interface configuration.
Expected Outcome
The nurse-call signal is transmitted and cleared correctly.

12. Inspect Power Cords, Cables, and Connections
Action
Inspect:
- Main power cord and plug
- Auxiliary outlet cord and plug, when installed
- Accessible cables for cuts, wear, pinching, or exposed conductors

- Equipotential connections, when installed
Confirm that all grounding connections are secure to the frame.

13. Inspect the Ground Chain
Action
Inspect the ground chain for cleanliness and damage.
Confirm:
- The chain is intact.
- It is free of contamination that would interfere with floor contact.
- At least two links contact the floor.

The ground chain is clean, secure, and maintains appropriate floor contact.
14. Replace the Main Bed Batteries
Action
The annual PM checklist lists replacement of the bed batteries.
- Disconnect AC power.
- Turn off the battery disconnect switch.
- Replace the batteries using the battery-replacement procedure in the maintenance manual.
- Confirm battery wiring and polarity.
- Reset the main battery statistics through the service menu.
- Complete the full power cycle specified by the manual.
- Verify battery operation with AC power disconnected.

Zoom Drive

IV Pole
- Inspect the IV pole for bends or damage.
- Confirm extension, retraction, and locking functions.
Electric Brakes and Secure Connect
- Confirm electric brake control from the footboard and siderails.
- Confirm Secure Connect displays connected with brakes applied.
Expected Outcome
Every installed option operates correctly and shows no physical damage.
16. Final Functional Inspection
Action
- Recheck all functions after battery replacement, calibration, or adjustments.
- Confirm no active fault messages remain.
- Confirm the bed operates on AC and battery power.
- Restore covers, cords, accessories, and configuration.
- Clean the bed after service as needed.

The bed is fully assembled, calibrated, electrically safe, and ready for service.

- Fowler indication is accurate through the listed 0°–65° range.
- Controls, indicators, night light, nurse call, and installed options operate correctly.
- Ground impedance is ≤ 0.200 Ω.
- Leakage current is ≤ 300 µA.
- Cords, cables, electrical connections, grounds, and ground chain are intact.
- Batteries have been addressed according to the manufacturer checklist and facility policy.
- No unresolved faults or unsafe conditions remain.
Remove From Service
Remove the bed from service for:
- Failed brakes, casters, steer, siderail latches, or CPR release
- Structural cracks, loose welds, damaged panels, or unsafe hardware
- Exposed wiring, damaged power cords, pinched cables, or loose grounding
- Ground impedance above 0.200 Ω
- Leakage current above 300 µA
- Inaccurate scale or Bed Exit operation that cannot be calibrated
- Uncontrolled, incomplete, or incorrect bed motion
- Nurse-call failure when the bed is assigned to a location requiring that function
- Battery failure or inability to operate safely on backup power
- Unresolved fault codes
- Any condition that could affect patient or staff safety
