Verathon BladderScan Prime Plus Operations & Maintenance Manual, 0900-4510 Rev 16; maintenance requirements cross-checked against 0900-4988 Rev 07. Verify the locally applicable current revision before service.
Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status
Verathon instructs users to inspect the console, probe, probe cable, power supply, power cords, batteries, and plugs once each week for damage or cracks. The battery charger should also be inspected before each use. Cracks that permit fluid ingress into the console or probe can affect performance.
The system does not require routine or periodic calibration under normal use. CaliScan tests the probe's mechanical components and transducer function; it does not calibrate the system. CaliScan may be included when facility policy or regional regulation requires periodic maintenance, after the probe is dropped, after extended storage, or when probe performance is questioned. The onboard self-test is also manufacturer-supported, but the manual assigns neither self-test nor CaliScan a recurring calendar interval.
Lifecycle notice: Verathon lists Prime Plus as discontinued in most geographies and states that end of support begins May 31, 2027. Confirm the applicable regional and serial-number support status when repair, certification, software, or parts are needed. This lifecycle date does not replace the manufacturer maintenance interval.
Maintenance beyond the operations manual and internal repairs must be performed by qualified/authorized service personnel. If the facility changes the weekly interval or adds scheduled self-test, CaliScan, electrical, or other activities, control those changes through its approved AEM program, documented risk assessment, maintenance history, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Verify Identity, Configuration, and Support Status
Action: Record asset tag, serial number, exact Prime Plus configuration, probe, two batteries, charger/power-adapter information, console base/cart, optional printer, installed software, and region. Confirm the applicable manual and current service/parts support status.
Expected outcome: The system matches CMMS, all configured components are identified, and the correct maintenance and lifecycle information applies.
2. Review History and Protect Stored Information
Action: Review inaccurate-reading, probe-drop, extended-storage, charging, battery-runtime, printer, self-test, CaliScan, impact, fluid-ingress, software, repair, and user-complaint history. Remove the unit from clinical use and protect/export patient data only under facility privacy policy.
Expected outcome: Conditions requiring CaliScan, escalation, or corrective work are identified and protected information is controlled.
3. Inspect the Console
Action: Inspect the housing, touchscreen, battery door/latch, Standby button, brightness and volume controls, feet/base, ports and port cover, connectors, labels, seams, and openings. Look for cracks, looseness, impact damage, contamination, overheating, or any path for fluid ingress.
Expected outcome: The console is complete, secure, legible, clean, and free of safety- or performance-affecting damage.
4. Inspect the Probe and Probe Cable
Action: Inspect the probe dome, housing, display, button, cable jacket, connector, contacts, and both strain reliefs. Check for cracks, cuts, kinks, separation, bent contacts, contamination, drop damage, or fluid-ingress paths.
Expected outcome: The probe, cable, and connector are intact and suitable for imaging; damage that could permit fluid ingress requires removal from service.
5. Inspect Both Batteries
Action: Remove and inspect both approved batteries for cracks, leakage, swelling, deformation, corrosion, impact, contaminated contacts, or overheating. Press each battery test button and record the approximate 25/50/75/100% indication. Review runtime complaints; consider replacement when time between charges is significantly reduced and affects use.
Expected outcome: Both batteries are undamaged, identified by the charger/console, and retain adequate usable capacity.
6. Inspect the Charger, Power Adapter, Cords, and Plugs
Action: Inspect the approved dual-bay charger, power adapter, mains cord, DC cable, plugs, pins, insulation, and strain reliefs before use. Confirm the correct components, an accessible disconnect, and the required 2 m (6 ft) separation from patients. Do not use a cracked or damaged charger.
Expected outcome: The power system is correct, secure, undamaged, and positioned outside the patient-contact area.
7. Inspect the Base, Cart, Printer, and Accessories
Action: Inspect the console base or mobile-cart mounting, quick-release lever, locking pin, casters/brakes, probe holder, optional printer/door/cutter, paper path, contacts, cables, and storage. Confirm the console is retained and cables are not pinched, excessively bent, or strained.
Expected outcome: Mounting and accessories are stable, secure, complete, and free of mechanical or electrical damage.
8. Clean and Disinfect the System
Action: Place the console in standby, remove all gel, and clean the console, probe, and cable with a current Verathon-compatible product and method. Disinfect the probe dome with an approved low-level disinfectant for its full wet-contact time, then air dry. Do not immerse, autoclave, sterilize, or use metal/abrasive brushes.
Expected outcome: The system is visibly clean, disinfected where required, dry, and undamaged without fluid intrusion.
9. Verify Startup, Touchscreen, Controls, and Probe Interface
Action: Install a battery charged to at least 50%, connect the probe, and start the console. Verify normal boot, Home screen, touchscreen response, brightness/volume controls, battery status, date/time, probe display/button, aiming interface, and absence of unresolved alerts.
Expected outcome: Startup completes normally and all operator controls, displays, and probe interfaces respond correctly.
10. Verify Both Charger Bays and Battery Operation
Action: Test each battery in each charger bay. Confirm normal indications: green solid for fully charged, green flashing for fast charging, or yellow solid for suspended/standby charging. A red indication is a charging error requiring escalation. Verify the console operates from each battery.
Expected outcome: Both batteries power the console and both charger bays recognize/charge them without a red error or intermittent connection.
11. Run the Onboard Self-Test
Action: With the battery at least 50% charged and all normally configured components attached, open Settings → Self-Test. Review the results for internal/external memory, console hardware, installed battery, probe, optional printer, and software. Print the results if documentation is required.
Expected outcome: Every applicable self-test item passes with no failed or abnormal result.
12. Complete CaliScan When Required
Action: When required by the facility PM schedule, regulation, probe-drop history, extended storage, or suspected probe fault, open Settings → Admin → Start CaliScan Test, review the instructions, and start the test. Do not press Standby or disconnect the probe while it runs.
Expected outcome: The console reports that the probe passed. A failure requires contact with Verathon/authorized service and is not corrected by labeling CaliScan as calibration.
13. Verify the Optional Printer
Action: If installed, confirm thermal paper is loaded correctly and print the self-test or an approved non-patient report. Inspect feed, door latch, print density, alignment, legibility, and cutter. Clean disconnected printer/console contacts only by the manual procedure and not more frequently than annually unless malfunctioning.
Expected outcome: The printer produces a complete, legible record without feed, power, contact, or cutter problems, or is documented N/A.
14. Review Software and Configuration
Action: Record the software version and verify date/time, facility identification, privacy/PIN settings, and required scan/report configuration. Install software only when supplied by Verathon or an authorized representative; export retained exams first and follow the update procedure exactly.
Expected outcome: Configuration is correct and any software action is authorized, traceable, and completed without loss of required information.
15. Perform Configuration-Appropriate Electrical Safety
Action: Inspect/test the mains-connected charger and power adapter according to their exact labels and the facility's adopted electrical-safety standard. Record equipment classification, protective-earth applicability, touch/enclosure leakage where required, limits, readings, and result. Do not apply an unsupported test or an invented OEM limit.
Expected outcome: All tests appropriate to the verified charger/power-adapter configuration meet the facility's adopted criteria.
16. Restore, Recheck, and Document
Action: Remove test data, install a charged approved battery, place the spare battery in the charger, restore accessories and cable routing, and repeat startup/charging checks. Document weekly inspection findings, both batteries/bays, self-test, CaliScan reason/result or N/A, printer, electrical results, lifecycle status, corrective work, and disposition.
Expected outcome: The complete Prime Plus system is clean, charged, correctly configured, and either returned to service with complete records or clearly removed from service.
Electrical Safety Testing
The console and probe operate from a removable battery, while the charger/power adapter connects to mains. Verathon requires the provided power components, a properly grounded outlet, an accessible disconnect, inspection of the charger before each use, and 2 m (6 ft) separation from the patient. Test the exact charger/power-adapter configuration under the facility's adopted standard. Record protective-earth resistance only when applicable to the verified supply, otherwise document N/A; record any required touch/enclosure leakage in microamps with the facility limit. The reviewed manual does not provide one routine numeric leakage acceptance limit, so this procedure does not invent one.
