Manufacturer Recommendation / AEM Status
The ZOLL AED 3 automatically performs functional testing during periodic self-tests. Manufacturer-listed self-tests include:
- Battery-installation self-test
- Power-on self-test
- Manual self-test
- Automatic self-test configured for either 1-day or 7-day intervals
- Automatic monthly self-test
The self-tests evaluate:
- Battery capacity

Do not use abrasives, ketones such as MEK or acetone, or chlorine solution on contacts or connectors. Do not immerse or sterilize the AED.
Step-by-Step PM Procedure
1. Verify Device Identification
Confirm the manufacturer, model, serial number, asset number, and AED version:
- ZOLL AED 3
- ZOLL AED 3 Automatic
- ZOLL AED 3 BLS
Expected outcome: Device identity and the correct test procedure are confirmed.
2. Review Device History and Reported Problems
Review the service history, recent self-test failures, readiness alerts, battery replacements, pad replacements, and clinical-use reports.
When available, review or export device-history data.
Expected outcome: Known faults or recurring readiness problems are identified before testing.
3. Inspect the AED Exterior
Inspect the AED for:
- Dirt or contamination
- Cracks
- Loose parts
- Excessive wear
- Damaged display
- Damaged controls
- Damaged handle or support bar
- Damaged battery compartment
- Damaged pad connector
- Signs of liquid intrusion
- Missing labels or unreadable markings
Expected outcome: AED is clean, intact, and free of damage that could affect use.
Remove the AED from service if there are cracks, loose components, liquid intrusion, significant impact damage, or another condition that could affect safe operation.
4. Clean the AED as Needed
Clean the AED using a soft damp cloth and one of the manufacturer-listed cleaning methods.
After using a cleaning solution, wipe the AED with a water-dampened cloth to remove residue.
Do not:
- Immerse the AED
- Sterilize the AED
- Use abrasives on the display
- Use ketones
- Apply chlorine mixture to contacts or connectors
Expected outcome: AED is visibly clean without chemical residue or damage.
5. Inspect the Defibrillation Pads
Verify:
- Pads are compatible with the AED 3
- Pad cable is connected
- Package is sealed
- Package is not torn, punctured, crushed, wet, or previously opened
- Pads are within the expiration date
- Correct adult or pediatric pads are available according to the facility configuration
Replace expired, opened, damaged, used, or incompatible pads.
Expected outcome: Compatible, sealed, unexpired pads are connected and ready for use.
6. Inspect the Battery
Verify:
- Battery is properly installed
- Battery is within its install-by or expiration date
- Battery compartment and contacts are clean and undamaged
- There is no swelling, cracking, leakage, or other physical damage
- No repeated CHANGE BATTERY message has been reported
The manufacturer does not list a fixed battery-replacement interval in this manual. Replace the battery based on expiration, low-battery indication, self-test failure, damage, or failure to support normal AED operation.
Expected outcome: Battery is installed, undamaged, within date, and not indicating replacement.
7. Check the Standby Readiness Indicator
With the AED powered off, verify that the status indicator displays a green check.
A blank indicator means the AED failed its last self-test or is not ready for use.
Expected outcome: Green check is displayed.
If the indicator is blank:
- Verify the pad connection
- Check or replace the pads as indicated
- Check or replace the battery as indicated
- Perform a manual self-test
Remove the AED from service if the green check does not return.
8. Perform the Manual Self-Test
Press and hold the On/Off button for at least 5 seconds.
Allow the AED to complete the manual self-test.
Verify:
- The test completes without failure
- The AED does not issue UNIT FAILED
- No unresolved battery or pad message is displayed
- The status indicator returns to a green check
The manual self-test includes the manufacturer-listed self-test functions and a 200-joule charge and discharge test.
Expected outcome: Manual self-test passes and the green check is displayed.
9. Verify Power-On Operation
Power on the AED normally.
Verify:
- Display activates
- Audio prompts are present and understandable
- The AED issues or displays UNIT OK
- No failure message is present
- Controls and touch screen respond
- Battery indication is acceptable
- Device date and time are correct according to facility policy
Expected outcome: AED powers on normally with a clear display and understandable audio.
10. Perform the Optional Simulator Test
This is the manufacturer-listed optional maintenance test for technical professionals. Use the procedure that matches the AED version.
ZOLL AED 3 and AED 3 BLS
- Connect the ZOLL AED Simulator to the defibrillation-pad connector.
- Power on the simulator and AED.
- Verify the status indicator changes from blank to green within approximately 4 to 5 seconds.
- Verify UNIT OK is issued and displayed within 5 seconds.
- Verify the shock count and elapsed-event time are displayed.
- Apply a ventricular fibrillation rhythm from the simulator.
- Verify the AED analyzes the rhythm.
- Verify the AED issues SHOCK ADVISED.
- Verify the AED charges and prompts the operator to press the flashing Shock button.
- Verify the charge-ready tone and illuminated Shock button.
- Press the Shock button.
- Verify the simulator registers a shock.
- Verify the AED shock count displays 1.
- Verify the AED issues START CPR.
- Activate simulator CPR.
- Verify metronome operation.
- Verify PUSH HARDER, followed by GOOD COMPRESSIONS, within 60 seconds.
- After approximately 2 minutes, verify STOP CPR.
- Change the simulator rhythm to normal sinus rhythm.
- Verify the AED begins another analysis and issues NO SHOCK ADVISED.
Expected outcome: AED properly recognizes ventricular fibrillation and normal sinus rhythm, charges, delivers a shock, and provides CPR feedback.
ZOLL AED 3 Automatic
Perform the same sequence with the following changes:
- Verify the AED announces the automatic-shock countdown.
- Verify the AED automatically delivers the shock.
- Verify the SHOCK DELIVERED message.
- Do not press a Shock button to deliver therapy.
Expected outcome: AED automatically delivers the advised shock and completes the CPR and normal-sinus-rhythm sequences correctly.
11. Verify CPR Feedback
During simulator testing, verify:
- CPR metronome is audible
- CPR sensor response is present
- PUSH HARDER occurs when appropriate
- GOOD COMPRESSIONS follows adequate simulated compressions
- CPR display information is reasonable for the configured AED version
Expected outcome: CPR monitoring, sensor input, display, and audio feedback operate correctly.
12. Verify Final Readiness
Disconnect the simulator and reconnect compatible, sealed, unexpired pads.
Power the AED off and verify:
- Pads are connected
- Battery remains installed
- AED is clean and complete
- Status indicator displays a green check
- No unresolved message or alarm is present
- Required accessories are present
- AED is returned to its normal deployment location
Expected outcome: AED is ready for emergency use.
Electrical Safety Testing
The ZOLL AED 3 is an internally battery-powered, defibrillator-proof Type BF device.
The provided manual does not list routine ground-resistance testing, chassis-leakage testing, or a manufacturer leakage-current limit for preventive maintenance.
Do not document ground resistance or chassis leakage as a manufacturer-listed requirement based on this manual.
When the facility requires electrical safety testing under local policy, document the facility standard used and keep that testing separate from the manufacturer-listed AED maintenance procedure.
Pass / Fail Criteria
Pass
The AED passes PM when:
- Exterior is clean and free of significant damage
- Pads are compatible, sealed, connected, and within expiration
- Battery is undamaged, within date, and not indicating replacement
- Status indicator displays a green check
- Manual self-test passes
- Display and audio operate correctly
- No unresolved fault message is present
- Optional simulator test passes when performed
- Ventricular fibrillation is recognized as shockable
- Shock is delivered correctly
- CPR feedback operates correctly
- Normal sinus rhythm is identified as non-shockable
- AED returns to standby with a green check
Remove From Service
Remove the AED from service when:
- The green check does not appear after corrective actions and a manual self-test
- UNIT FAILED persists
- The AED continues beeping after pad, battery, and self-test checks
- Audio or display failure persists
- A shock is not delivered when correctly commanded
- An Automatic model fails to deliver the automatic shock
- An internal error is suspected
- The housing is cracked or components are loose
- Liquid intrusion or significant physical damage is present
- The battery or pads cannot be restored to acceptable condition
- Any manufacturer-listed functional test fails

Scheduled PM
Use the manufacturer service manual, facility policy, and approved AEM program to determine the final PM interval and return-to-service requirements.
