Step-by-Step PM Procedure

1. Verify Device Identification

Confirm the manufacturer, model, serial number, asset number, and AED version:

Expected outcome: Device identity and the correct test procedure are confirmed.

2. Review Device History and Reported Problems

Review the service history, recent self-test failures, readiness alerts, battery replacements, pad replacements, and clinical-use reports.

When available, review or export device-history data.

Expected outcome: Known faults or recurring readiness problems are identified before testing.

3. Inspect the AED Exterior

Inspect the AED for:

Expected outcome: AED is clean, intact, and free of damage that could affect use.

Remove the AED from service if there are cracks, loose components, liquid intrusion, significant impact damage, or another condition that could affect safe operation.

4. Clean the AED as Needed

Clean the AED using a soft damp cloth and one of the manufacturer-listed cleaning methods.

After using a cleaning solution, wipe the AED with a water-dampened cloth to remove residue.

5. Inspect the Defibrillation Pads

Verify:

Replace expired, opened, damaged, used, or incompatible pads.

Expected outcome: Compatible, sealed, unexpired pads are connected and ready for use.

6. Inspect the Battery

Verify:

The manufacturer does not list a fixed battery-replacement interval in this manual. Replace the battery based on expiration, low-battery indication, self-test failure, damage, or failure to support normal AED operation.

Expected outcome: Battery is installed, undamaged, within date, and not indicating replacement.

7. Check the Standby Readiness Indicator

With the AED powered off, verify that the status indicator displays a green check.

A blank indicator means the AED failed its last self-test or is not ready for use.

Expected outcome: Green check is displayed.

If the indicator is blank:

Remove the AED from service if the green check does not return.

8. Perform the Manual Self-Test

Press and hold the On/Off button for at least 5 seconds.

Allow the AED to complete the manual self-test.

Verify:

The manual self-test includes the manufacturer-listed self-test functions and a 200-joule charge and discharge test.

Expected outcome: Manual self-test passes and the green check is displayed.

9. Verify Power-On Operation

Power on the AED normally.

Verify:

Expected outcome: AED powers on normally with a clear display and understandable audio.

10. Perform the Optional Simulator Test

This is the manufacturer-listed optional maintenance test for technical professionals. Use the procedure that matches the AED version.

ZOLL AED 3 and AED 3 BLS

  1. Connect the ZOLL AED Simulator to the defibrillation-pad connector.
  2. Power on the simulator and AED.
  3. Verify the status indicator changes from blank to green within approximately 4 to 5 seconds.
  4. Verify UNIT OK is issued and displayed within 5 seconds.
  5. Verify the shock count and elapsed-event time are displayed.
  6. Apply a ventricular fibrillation rhythm from the simulator.
  7. Verify the AED analyzes the rhythm.
  8. Verify the AED issues SHOCK ADVISED.
  9. Verify the AED charges and prompts the operator to press the flashing Shock button.
  10. Verify the charge-ready tone and illuminated Shock button.
  11. Press the Shock button.
  12. Verify the simulator registers a shock.
  13. Verify the AED shock count displays 1.
  14. Verify the AED issues START CPR.
  15. Activate simulator CPR.
  16. Verify metronome operation.
  17. Verify PUSH HARDER, followed by GOOD COMPRESSIONS, within 60 seconds.
  18. After approximately 2 minutes, verify STOP CPR.
  19. Change the simulator rhythm to normal sinus rhythm.
  20. Verify the AED begins another analysis and issues NO SHOCK ADVISED.

Expected outcome: AED properly recognizes ventricular fibrillation and normal sinus rhythm, charges, delivers a shock, and provides CPR feedback.

ZOLL AED 3 Automatic

Perform the same sequence with the following changes:

Expected outcome: AED automatically delivers the advised shock and completes the CPR and normal-sinus-rhythm sequences correctly.

11. Verify CPR Feedback

During simulator testing, verify:

Expected outcome: CPR monitoring, sensor input, display, and audio feedback operate correctly.

12. Verify Final Readiness

Disconnect the simulator and reconnect compatible, sealed, unexpired pads.

Power the AED off and verify:

Expected outcome: AED is ready for emergency use.

Electrical Safety Testing

The ZOLL AED 3 is an internally battery-powered, defibrillator-proof Type BF device.

The provided manual does not list routine ground-resistance testing, chassis-leakage testing, or a manufacturer leakage-current limit for preventive maintenance.

Do not document ground resistance or chassis leakage as a manufacturer-listed requirement based on this manual.

When the facility requires electrical safety testing under local policy, document the facility standard used and keep that testing separate from the manufacturer-listed AED maintenance procedure.
